Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Perth
Seasonal patterns — Perth fishing follows clear seasonal rhythms. Summer (Dec–Feb) fires up pelagic action: bonito, Australian salmon and small tuna work the coastline and nearshore reefs, with weather-stable mornings producing topwater strikes. Autumn (Mar–May) is a prime transition for snapper and dhufish as bait moves on and water cools; cleaner seas make reef fishing productive. Winter (Jun–Aug) pushes species like tailor, mulloway and whiting into estuaries and beach gutters as bait concentrates in tidal channels. Spring (Sep–Nov) ramps up spawning movements for many reef and estuary species, increasing receptiveness to lures and fresh baits around structure and points.
Habitat types — Perth offers diverse marks: the urban Swan River and coastal estuaries hold bream, whiting and flathead along mangrove fringes, sandbanks and drop-offs. Rocky headlands, groynes and the Fremantle and Hillarys jetties produce tailor, samson and trevally. Offshore reefs around Rottnest and Gage Roads host snapper, dhufish and kingfish, while the continental shelf and bluewater beyond yield mackerel and larger pelagic species. Sandy beaches and surf gutters are top for whiting, tailor and herring, whereas deeper reef ledges are go-to for reef predators.
Common techniques — Match your approach to the water. Estuary bream and whiting respond to light soft plastics on 1–3kg rods or simple running sinker rigs with small hooks and natural baits like prawns and worms. Beach and surf anglers use heavier rods with 50–100g sinkers, running metal slugs, strip baits or surface poppers for tailor and salmon. For structure and reefs, vertical jigging, slow pitch metal jigs and live baiting produce snapper and dhufish; use 20–40lb braid with a quality fluorocarbon leader for abrasion resistance. For pelagics, fast-retrieve stickbaits, small poppers and metal slugs cast or trolled at dawn and dusk are consistently effective.
Tactical tips — Read tides and bait: early flood into structure and the hour after tide change are often the most productive. Inshore currents and weed lines concentrate baitfish and draw predators; drift slowly across reef edges and hollows with live or sticky baits. When targeting bottom-hugging dhufish or snapper, fish slowly with scented soft plastics or live pike/garfish, and consider a fish-finder to locate hard structure. For estuary mulloway, night sessions using big soft plastics, surface blades or whole pilchards can trigger explosive strikes. Use berley sparingly around jetties to attract species without spooking wary fish.
- Use lighter leaders and smaller profiles for estuary species, heavier setups for reef and offshore targets.
- Switch between natural baits and lures if bite is slow — pilchards, squid strips and prawns are hard to beat.
- Scout weather and swell; calm mornings often mean clearer water and different presentation requirements than rough conditions.
- Keep a range of jig sizes (40–150g) and soft plastics to cover depths from gutters to 40+ metres.
Perth rewards anglers who read tides, adapt presentations to structure and carry a mixed tackle box for estuary, beach and reef situations. Learn local spots around Fremantle, Scarborough, Hillarys and Rottnest, watch bait movement and vary retrieves to consistently connect with the best species Western Australia has to offer.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 8 beaches and bays in this area.
