Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Bangor
Bangor, North Wales sits on one of the most productive stretches of coast in the UK, with the Menai Strait and nearby shores offering consistent sport for sea anglers, and the surrounding Gwynedd hills providing classic Welsh river and stillwater fishing. The key to fishing Bangor effectively is understanding how tides, seasons and local structure shape fish movements.
The Menai Strait is the main focus. Fast-running tides around the Menai Bridge and Britannia Bridge funnel bait and concentrate predators. From spring through early autumn, lure anglers target bass, pollack and coalfish by working soft plastics, slim metals and small hard baits along the edges of the current, especially around slack water at the top and bottom of the tide. Casting up-tide and allowing lures to swing naturally in the flow often outfishes a straight retrieve. At night, surface and sub-surface lures fished tight to structure can pick off better-sized bass.
Through summer, mackerel and garfish push into the Strait and off nearby rock marks, making feathering and light float tactics very effective. A simple set of small sabiki or daylights fished mid-water over depth, with a 2–3 oz lead, will quickly locate shoals. When the water cools in autumn and winter, Bangor’s shore fishing switches to codling, whiting, dogfish and rays. Use 4–6 oz grip leads and clipped-down pulley or two-hook flapper rigs baited with lugworm, ragworm, squid or mackerel strip. Focus on evening and night sessions on a flooding tide for the most consistent bites.
For rough-ground specialists, rockier marks and deeper channels hold bull huss, conger and bigger rays. Heavy mono or fluorocarbon traces (80 lb+) and large hooks baited with fish or squid cocktails are standard. Tackle losses are inevitable over kelp and boulders, so keep rigs simple and robust. In cleaner sand and mud areas, long casting with streamlined rigs helps reach channels where flounder, dab and occasional plaice feed; small worm baits and size 1–2 hooks are ideal.
Boat anglers launching from nearby facilities can access wrecks and offshore banks where pollack, ling, tope and smoothhound are realistic targets. Vertical jigging with metal lures and shads over wrecks produces pollack and codling, while long flowing traces with fish baits presented downtide tempt tope and smoothhound in summer.
Inland, rivers within a short drive of Bangor hold wild brown trout, grayling, sea trout and salmon. Freestone Welsh spate rivers fish best after a rise and fall in water, with small nymphs, spiders and dry flies productive for trout and grayling from spring to autumn. Low, clear conditions often demand fine leaders and sparse patterns. Evening and night fly or spinner tactics are commonly used for sea trout when they’re present, focusing on deeper pools and glides.
Stillwaters and small reservoirs around Bangor offer year-round fishing for stocked rainbow trout and coarse species like perch, roach, pike and carp. On fly-oriented waters, intermediate lines and lures (such as damsels and boobies) work well in cooler months, while nymphs and buzzers under the wind are consistent in spring. Coarse anglers do well with method feeders and wafters for carp, and small soft plastics or drop-shot rigs for perch around structure.
Wherever you fish around Bangor, success comes from watching tide tables, water clarity, wind direction and recent weather. Travel light, be prepared to move between marks, and match tackle and tactics to each specific venue for the most productive sessions.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 8 beaches and bays in this area.
