Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 19:3 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Lerwick

Lerwick, on the east coast of Shetland’s Mainland, sits right on a mix of natural rock ledges, deep channels and harbour structures that make it one of the most reliable sea fishing bases in the northern UK. Cold, clean North Atlantic water and strong tides keep baitfish and predators moving, so there’s usually something to target year-round, with peak action from late spring through early autumn.

Seasonal patterns around Lerwick are driven by water temperature and daylight. From April, increasing light brings in shoals of coalfish (saithe), small codling and early pollack along the rock edges and pier walls. June to September is prime time: mackerel, herring and garfish push in close, fuelling frantic sport on light spinning gear and providing fresh bait for bigger cod, ling and conger. Autumn sees fewer mackerel but often bigger cod and pollack from the deeper ground. Through winter, bites slow but never completely shut down; cod, coalies and flatfish remain catchable on bottom rigs from deeper marks and harbour areas that retain slightly warmer water.

Key habitats are rock ledges, harbour walls and offshore reefs. The rocks north and south of Lerwick offer steep drop-offs into 10–30+ metres, perfect for pollack, coalies and wrasse. The town’s piers, ferry terminal area and breakwaters draw bait and provide shelter, making them excellent for mixed-species sessions when the weather’s rough. Just offshore, reefs, banks and wrecks hold quality cod, ling, haddock and occasional rays; local charter boats work these areas efficiently when conditions allow.

Effective shore techniques are simple but need to be robust. For pollack and coalies, a 9–10ft spinning rod rated 20–40g with 20–30lb braid casts metals or soft plastics tight to the rocks. Let lures sink then retrieve steadily, using a stop–start lift to trigger takes. On bottom, a sturdy beach/rock rod with a 4–6oz lead and pulley or two-hook flapper covers cod, whiting and flatfish. Fresh mackerel strip, sandeel, squid and bluey are standout baits; tip with a sliver of fish or a small strip of luminous tubing for extra attraction in deeper, darker water.

Boat tactics out of Lerwick focus on vertical work over structure. Over reefs and wrecks, 20–30lb class outfits with 30–50lb braid fish pirks, Norwegian-style jigs or long flowing bait traces for cod, ling and haddock. Drop to the bottom, then work the lure 2–5m up, maintaining contact in the strong Shetland tides. On calmer days, lighter 12–20lb gear with small hokkai or shrimp rigs will quickly fill the bait bucket with mackerel and coalies.

Practical tactical tips include planning around tides and wind. Lerwick fishes best on moving water, especially the first two hours of the flood or ebb. A stiff onshore wind can colour the water and push bait in tight, improving daytime sport, but makes clean ground marks and sheltered harbour corners more comfortable and productive. Always carry spare rigs, heavier leads and abrasion-resistant leaders; the local ground is rough and tackle losses are part of the game. With a simple, robust setup and a focus on rock edges, pier structure and tide changes, Lerwick delivers consistent, no-nonsense sea fishing for visiting and local anglers alike.
