Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Plymouth
Plymouth offers exceptional saltwater fishing thanks to its mix of harbour, estuary, reef and offshore ground. Plymouth Sound is a sheltered hub, feeding into the River Plym and River Tamar, while the open English Channel and marks like the Eddystone and Hand Deeps provide serious sport for boat anglers. Access is straightforward, with fishing possible from piers, breakwaters, rock marks and beaches as well as a strong local charter fleet.
Seasonally, spring sees increasing activity in Plymouth Sound as water temperatures climb. Plaice and flounder show on clean sand, with school bass moving into the estuaries. Float fished ragworm around structure scores early wrasse and pollack. Summer is peak time: mackerel shoals pack into the Sound and along the Breakwater, drawing in bass, pollack, garfish and predators like tope offshore. By autumn, larger bass move onto rough ground and surf beaches, while black bream and rays feed hard before winter. The colder months favour whiting, pouting, dogfish, codling and big conger from deeper marks.
Habitat variety is the key advantage in Plymouth. The Breakwater and Mount Batten areas give easy access to mixed rough and clean ground for wrasse, pollack, mackerel and ray. The inner Sound and Sutton Harbour edges hold mullet and flounder, best targeted with light tackle and small baits or bread flake. Out towards Rame Head and Wembury, rock ledges drop onto kelp and reef that consistently produce wrasse, pollack and bass on both bait and lures. Offshore, reefs and wrecks like Eddystone, Hand Deeps and numerous wrecks in the Channel hold conger, ling, cod, pollack and tope.
Successful techniques vary by mark. For shore anglers targeting bass, a sensible starting approach is:
- Medium beach rod with a 2–4oz lead, pulley or running ledger, 20–30lb leader and fresh peeler crab or fish strip.
- Fish into surf or on the edge of rough ground at dusk or dawn, especially on a flooding tide.
- For lure fishing, use 20–30g soft plastics or surface lures along rocky points and tidal races.
Wrasse around the rocks respond best to strong, abrasion-resistant tackle, small hooks (size 2–1/0) and crab or ragworm baits lowered into gullies. Tight drag and steady pressure are essential to keep fish out of the kelp. Pollack can be picked off by casting metal jigs or soft shads parallel to drop-offs and retrieving steadily through mid-water.
Boat fishing from Plymouth is first class. Charter boats regularly work reefs and wrecks for conger, ling, cod, pollack and tope. Tactics are generally simple but effective: baited muppets or flowing traces with mackerel or squid for pollack and cod; heavy mono traces with large fish baits for conger; and long wire or heavy mono traces with fresh mackerel flapper for tope. Drifting sandbanks with flowing traces and smaller baits will turn up turbot, brill, rays and gurnards.
Tactically, tide is crucial around Plymouth. Plan sessions for the middle hours of a moving tide, with many rock and reef marks fishing best on the flood. Water clarity also matters: lures excel in clear, calm conditions, while a little colour in the water often improves bait fishing for bass and rays. Keep mobile, adjust casting angles to locate features or channels, and match hook size and bait presentation closely to the species you’re targeting for consistent success around this highly productive port.

Wharf's or Jetties are good places to wet a line and meet other fishermen. They often produce a fresh feed of fish and are also great to catch bait fish. As they are often well lit, they also provide a good opportunity for night fishing. There are 15 wharf(s) in this area.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 6 beaches and bays in this area.
