Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 17:27 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. The graph below shows you the 3 hourly weather progression over the next 7 days. Scroll the graph left or right to see more.

Fishing Overview South Shields

South Shields, on the south bank of the River Tyne, is one of the most consistent sea angling areas in North East England. The town combines the rough ground of the open North Sea with the more sheltered Tyne estuary, giving year-round options from rock marks, clean surf beaches, piers and boat fishing just offshore.

The standout feature is South Shields Pier, a long, curved structure protecting the Tyne entrance. In winter, codling and coalfish hug the rough ground and scoured gullies along the pier wall. Fish the seaward side on a flooding or high tide with 4–6oz grip leads, pulley pennel rigs and big baits – frozen black lugworm, yellowtail, mussel and squid cocktails are proven cod baits here. Casting tight to the structure and into any coloured water line often produces better fish than long-range casting.

Along the inside of the pier and into Littlehaven Beach, the bottom cleans up and suits flounder, dab and whiting. Light two-hook flapper rigs with size 1–2 hooks, baited with worm or mackerel strip, account for mixed bags, especially on smaller tides. Whiting fishing is particularly strong from late autumn into early spring; keep baits small and frequent to stay in touch with shoals moving with the tide.

From late spring through summer, South Shields becomes a top mark for mackerel and other pelagic species. On calm, clear days with a flooding tide, feathering from the end of the pier or from the rock edges around the Groyne can be hectic. Use 3–4oz leads and small, slim-pattern feather rigs; swapping to single spinners or metals can pick out better-sized fish and reduce tangles when it’s busy. Occasional garfish and herring also show in the same conditions.

Bass fishing is increasingly popular along Sandhaven Beach, Trow Rocks and the surf lines around the estuary mouth. Target surf tables and gutters on a building or dropping tide, especially after an onshore blow when the water is slightly coloured. Natural baits such as peeler crab and large ragworm work well, but many local anglers now carry light lure rods too – surface walkers and soft plastic shads fished over shallow, broken ground can be deadly at first and last light.

The Tyne estuary inside the pier provides more sheltered fishing when the sea is heavy. Here, estuary flounder and smaller codling fall to simple running ledger or flapper rigs. The channel edges, mooring lines and jetty structures hold fish; aim to present baits just on the slope rather than in the deepest water. In summer, the estuary also offers school bass and eels on light tactics.

Boat anglers launching from the Tyne or boarding charter boats out of North Shields can access productive rough ground and wrecks directly off South Shields. These marks produce larger cod, ling, pollack and occasional rays and tope. Standard tactics are 20–30lb class gear with baited hokkais, flowing traces or pirks bounced close to wrecks and reefs.

In all areas around South Shields, tidal movement is critical. Plan sessions around the middle of the flood or ebb when current runs hardest, keep rigs streamlined to reduce drag, and match tackle to ground type – heavier mono or abrasion-resistant leaders for the rough pier ends and rocks, lighter gear over sand to maximise bites from flats and whiting.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 8 beaches and bays in this area.

King Edward's Bay - 2.58220609846km , Frenchman's Bay - 2.79332642916km , Marsden Bay - 4.04274865962km , Jakey's Beach - 4.29528760656km , Whitley Bay - 4.99312057674km , Whitburn Bay - 8.44140210924km , Cambois Bay - 18.31965972461km , Newbiggin Bay - 21.01556685879km

Harbours and Marinas can often times be productive fishing spots for land based fishing as their sheltered environment attracts a wide variety of bait fish. Similar to river mouths, harbour entrances are also great places to fish as lots of fish will move in and out with the rising and falling tides. There are 4 main harbours in this area.
