Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 18:6 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Stornoway

Stornoway fishing combines easy-access sea angling from harbour walls with rugged rock marks and a network of productive Lewis lochs a short drive from town. The Atlantic swell, strong tides and clean water around the Isle of Lewis create reliable sport for mackerel, pollack and other hard-fighting species through most of the year, while nearby rivers and lochs offer classic Hebridean salmon and trout fishing in season.

Sea fishing is the main draw for many visiting anglers. From late spring through early autumn, shoals of mackerel push close to the harbour, ferry terminal and shoreline. Simple sabiki or Hokkai feather rigs fished with a 2–4 oz lead produce fast sport; scale down to lighter spinning gear and single lures for better sport and easier unhooking. Rock marks outside Stornoway, especially along deeper, kelp-fringed shorelines, hold good numbers of pollack, coalfish and wrasse. Use 20–30 lb braid, a short fluorocarbon leader and weedless soft plastics or metal jigs, casting tight to structure and letting them sink before working them back with sharp lifts.

For those willing to book a charter or launch their own boat in suitable weather, inshore reefs and offshore banks south and north of Stornoway can be very productive. Expect a mix of ling, cod, haddock, whiting, gurnard and flatfish, with spurdog, thornback ray and conger eel possible over rougher ground. Use 20–30 lb class boat rods, 30–50 lb braid and flowing traces or simple running ledger rigs. Fresh mackerel strip, sandeel or squid are reliable baits; keep rigs streamlined to cope with Atlantic tides and drift.

Seasonal patterns are marked. April and May see the first consistent pollack and coalfish from the rocks, with mackerel building from June and peaking July to September. Autumn brings bigger pollack and improved chances of rays and spurdog in deeper water. Winter sea fishing still produces dogfish, whiting and occasional cod on bottom rigs from sheltered marks, so pick locations that offer some protection from prevailing south-westerlies and strong swell.

Freshwater fishing around Stornoway centres on classic Lewis lochs and short river systems. The area offers wild brown trout from early spring, best on mild, overcast days when fish patrol the shallows. Traditional loch-style wet flies, small dabblers and muddlers drifted from a boat work extremely well; from the bank, long leaders and single flies help keep presentation natural in clear water. Salmon and sea trout enter nearby rivers and lochs in summer and early autumn, with lightly dressed doubles and small tubes in peaty patterns effective in normal flows, and slightly heavier flies or spinners in higher water.

Tactically, watch the weather: wind direction and strength heavily influence both sea and loch fishing around Stornoway. On the coast, favour falling tides at dawn or dusk and look for colour changes, kelp beds and drop-offs where baitfish gather. On the lochs, use the wind to drift naturally along points and shorelines rather than casting randomly. Travel with a selection of spinning gear, feathers, soft plastics and a compact fly outfit, so you can switch quickly between harbour mackerel, rock pollack and loch trout as conditions change.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
