Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Ada
Ada, Oklahoma sits within easy reach of some of south‑central Oklahoma’s most diverse freshwater fishing. The nearby Lower Blue River, Wintersmith Lake inside city limits, and scattered small reservoirs and ponds create options for bass, catfish, crappie, trout, and panfish without long drives. Most spots are bank‑friendly, and light, versatile tackle covers nearly everything.
Seasonal patterns drive success around Ada. In early spring, rising water temps on the Blue River and local ponds push largemouth and smallmouth bass shallow to pre‑spawn staging areas: rocky points, brush, and the first drop off the bank. This is prime time for suspending jerkbaits, compact lipless crankbaits, and 3–4 inch swimbaits slow‑rolled just above the rocks. Crappie stack up around submerged wood and bridge pilings as they move toward spawning flats; small tube jigs and 1/16‑oz marabou or soft‑plastic crappie jigs under a fixed float produce well.
By late spring and through summer, vegetation thickens in ponds and shorelines at Wintersmith Lake. Bass shift to weed edges, shade, and any remaining wood or riprap. Early and late in the day, work the surface with poppers, buzzbaits, or hollow‑body frogs across pads and grass holes. As the sun rises, switch to Texas‑rigged worms, compact jigs, or weightless stickbaits pitched tight to cover. On the Blue River, smallmouth and spotted bass slide into faster runs and current seams where a 1/8‑oz ball head jig with a finesse plastic, small topwater walking bait, or in‑line spinner draws aggressive strikes.
Summer is also peak catfish time. Channel cats gather on soft bottoms, creek mouths, and around riprap and bridge abutments. Stink bait, chicken liver, or cut shad fished on a slip sinker rig just off the bottom is dependable. At night, move shallower and closer to shoreline transitions and flooded brush. Blue cats, where present in larger area reservoirs, respond well to fresh cut bait fished on current edges and ledges. Flatheads relate more to heavy cover; live sunfish or shad fished tight to logjams after dark is the classic approach.
In fall, cooling water around Ada pulls baitfish shallow and fires up both bass and crappie. Work squarebill crankbaits and spinnerbaits along rock, wood, and wind‑blown banks, then slow down with jigs once you locate fish. On the Blue River, downsized baits become more important: 3‑inch grubs, small jerkbaits, and Ned‑style finesse rigs hopped through current breaks are highly effective. Panfish feed heavily; tiny jigs tipped with worms or crickets under a small float are excellent for kids and numbers‑oriented anglers.
Depending on stocking schedules, parts of the Blue River system and selected nearby waters can offer a short rainbow trout window. When cold‑water releases or winter stockings are in play, focus on pools below riffles and deeper runs. Ultralight spinning tackle with 2–6 lb line, small inline spinners, 1/32‑ to 1/16‑oz marabou jigs, and scented dough baits on light leaders take fish consistently. In clear water, keep presentations natural: long casts, light fluorocarbon leaders, and subtle colors.
Habitat and tactics vary by water. The Blue River features clear to slightly stained water, chunk rock, boulders, and current seams—ideal for smallmouth and spotted bass. Think moving baits and bottom contact: jigs, grubs, and small crankbaits. Wintersmith Lake and local ponds are more stained, with brush, docks, and grass; soft plastics, jigs, and live bait shine. Walk the bank and note any changes: points, corners of retaining walls, drain pipes, or small coves usually hold fish.
To stay efficient, most Ada anglers carry a simple setup list:
- Medium spinning combo with 8–10 lb line for finesse bass, crappie, and trout.
- Medium‑heavy casting combo with 12–17 lb line for power fishing and catfish rigs.
- Small selection of soft plastics, a few cranks and topwaters, and basic terminal tackle for bottom‑rigging.
By matching your approach to the season, focusing on current, cover, and subtle structural changes, and keeping your tackle versatile, you can consistently catch fish across the varied waters around Ada.
