Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 15:10 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

Next Full Moon in ~15 days on 29th June
New Moon is generally a very productive time for fishing. Dark nights mean that many predators feed more actively during daylight hours. The combined gravity of sun and moon during New Moon days has a stronger effect on all water bodies, leads to increased food availabilty and hence better fishing.
  • Distance to earth:
    363,721 km
    Proximity:
    98.6 %
We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

Fishing Overview Akron

Fishing in Akron, Ohio revolves around a network of lakes, reservoirs, and rivers that offer reliable action through all four seasons. The Portage Lakes chain south of downtown is the primary draw, backed up by the Cuyahoga and Tuscarawas rivers, Nimisila Reservoir, and Mogadore Reservoir. Largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, carp, and seasonal walleye and trout opportunities give anglers plenty of options within a short drive.

Spring is one of the most productive times to fish around Akron. As water temperatures climb into the 50s, bass and panfish move shallow on Portage Lakes, Nimisila, and Mogadore. Target protected coves, seawalls, and emergent weedbeds with small jigs, wacky-rigged stickbaits, and finesse plastics. Crappie stack up around marinas, docks, and brush; 1/32–1/16 oz tube jigs under a float are consistent producers. On the Cuyahoga and Tuscarawas rivers, smallmouth bass and saugeye concentrate below riffles and at the heads and tails of deeper pools—3–4" swimbaits, hair jigs, and small crankbaits in natural shad or craw patterns excel.

Summer patterns in the Akron area revolve around vegetation, shade, and low-light feeding windows. On the Portage Lakes, focus on outside weed edges, submerged weedlines in 6–12 feet, and any transition from weeds to open water. Topwater frogs, buzzbaits, and walking baits are effective early and late in the day, while Texas rigs, jigs, and drop-shot rigs with straight-tail worms shine once the sun is up. Nimisila and Mogadore often fish best with quiet approaches—kayaks and small boats—casting weightless plastics and light jigs to visible cover and weed pockets.

For summer catfish around Akron, channel cats prowl points, creek mouths, and channel edges. Cut bait, chicken liver, and nightcrawlers fished on slip sinker rigs in 6–15 feet produce after dark. Carp fishing is excellent from shore on most local lakes and rivers; pack bait, corn, or dough balls presented on hair rigs near creek inlets and mud flats will draw fish.

Fall brings some of the best multi-species action. Cooling water pushes baitfish shallow, and both largemouth and smallmouth bass feed heavily. Work reaction baits—squarebill crankbaits, lipless cranks, spinnerbaits, and swimbaits—along shoreline structure, weedlines, and rocky banks on the rivers. Crappie and perch regroup around deeper brush and submerged timber; use small minnows or finesse jigs slow-rolled near bottom. On river stretches near Akron, focus on current seams, eddies, and deeper bends for smallmouth, saugeye, and channel catfish.

Winter fishing is driven by ice conditions on Portage Lakes, Nimisila, and Mogadore, plus open-water river opportunities. When safe ice forms, anglers target bluegill, crappie, and perch with tungsten jigs tipped with waxworms or soft plastics, concentrating around submerged vegetation, old creek channels, and man-made structure in 8–15 feet. Light line and small baits are critical in the typically clear winter water. Rivers like the Cuyahoga can stay partially open; slowly worked jigs, blade baits, and live minnows take cold-water smallmouth, saugeye, and catfish in deeper wintering holes and below dams.

Across Akron’s waters, success hinges on matching tactics to habitat: weedlines and docks for bass and panfish, channels and points for walleye and catfish, and current breaks and rock for river smallmouth and saugeye. Downsizing tackle, fishing low light, and staying mobile are consistent, practical ways to put more fish in the net around Akron throughout the year.

The Best Fishing Spots around Akron

Cuyahoga River

Flowing right through Akron, the Cuyahoga River offers year‑round action for smallmouth bass, walleye, northern pike, and seasonal runs of steelhead closer to Lake Erie; in warmer months, target riffles and pools with jigs and crankbaits, while cooler seasons reward slower presentations; shore access is ample at city parks and the Gorge area, with kayak and small-boat opportunities where current allows; anglers often hop between urban stretches and scenic upstream reaches toward Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

Turkeyfoot Lake

The centerpiece of the Portage Lakes, Turkeyfoot Lake is known for largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and channel catfish, with summer evenings producing strong topwater bites; numerous ramps, marinas, and shoreline parks make it easy to fish by boat or from shore, and winter often brings panfish through the ice; anglers frequently pair trips here with nearby Long Lake and Rex Lake to cover multiple patterns in a day.

Mogadore Reservoir

A longtime favorite east of Akron, Mogadore Reservoir shines for crappie, bluegill, perch, and largemouth bass, with spring crappie bites along brush and fall bass relating to edges and weedlines; shoreline piers and calm, no‑wake waters suit kayaks and small boats, and the reservoir’s coves and timber hold consistent fish through changing seasons; many anglers pair trips with Wingfoot Lake or Walborn Reservoir.

Nimisila Reservoir

Part of the Portage Lakes system but more tranquil, Nimisila Reservoir offers excellent largemouth, crappie, and catfish fishing, with emergent vegetation and stump fields creating prime ambush points; low-speed boating and plentiful shoreline pull-offs make it accessible for all anglers, and summer nights can produce steady catfish action; many anglers rotate between Nimisila and Turkeyfoot Lake depending on wind and pressure.

Berlin Lake

Stretching across multiple counties southeast of Akron, Berlin Lake is known for walleye, crappie, largemouth bass, and channel catfish, with productive spring and fall walleye along drops and creek mouths; ample ramps and long shoreline give both boaters and bank anglers plenty of room, and summer nights bring good catfish bites; anglers often compare patterns with West Branch Reservoir on the same weekend.

Springfield Lake

Close to downtown Akron, Springfield Lake offers convenient access to largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and channel catfish, with docks and weedlines producing consistent action; public ramps and shoreline parks make short after‑work sessions easy, and early summer topwater can be excellent; anglers often hop from here to Portage Lakes when weather or crowds dictate.

Summit Lake

A historic urban fishery in Akron, Summit Lake provides access to largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and catfish, with piers and shoreline trails offering plentiful bank fishing; protected coves and shallow flats warm early in spring for panfish, while summer evenings are productive for bass and catfish; it pairs well with a quick run to Springfield Lake or the Cuyahoga River for varied conditions.

Wingfoot Lake

Set beside the famous Goodyear blimp base, Wingfoot Lake is a family‑friendly spot with largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and channel catfish; well-kept shoreline access, picnic areas, and calm waters make it ideal for bank anglers and small craft, and spring and early summer see strong panfish activity around vegetation; many anglers also visit Mogadore Reservoir the same day.

Hinckley Lake

In the Cleveland Metroparks’ Hinckley Reservation northwest of Akron, Hinckley Lake is popular for stocked rainbow trout (seasonal), largemouth bass, crappie, and bluegill; rentals, ramps, and easy shoreline access appeal to casual and serious anglers alike, with early spring trout draws and steady warm‑season panfish; anglers often combine a visit here with river fishing on the Rocky River or Chagrin River.
