Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Buffalo
Buffalo, NY fishing revolves around two powerhouse waters: eastern Lake Erie and the Niagara River. Together they create one of the most productive multispecies fisheries in the Northeast, with consistent shots at trophy smallmouth bass, walleye, and lake trout. Access is excellent via Buffalo Harbor, the Outer Harbor, and multiple Niagara River launches and shoreline parks.
Seasonal patterns drive the best fishing. In early spring, harbor and nearshore areas warm first, drawing pre-spawn smallmouth, perch, and panfish tight to rocky shorelines and harbor structures. Tube jigs, hair jigs, and small swimbaits hopped slowly along bottom shine in 10–25 feet. As water warms into late spring and early summer, smallmouth slide to offshore rock piles and reefs off Buffalo, Hamburg, and Lackawanna; drifting or spot-locking over structure and working tubes or drop-shot rigs is a staple pattern.
Summer on Lake Erie is prime walleye fishing. Schools migrate east and are often found in 40–70 feet off Buffalo and north toward the Niagara Bar. Trolling crankbaits or crawler harnesses behind inline weights or divers is the standard approach. On calmer days, vertical jigging blade baits and heavy jigging spoons can be deadly when fish stack under the boat. Night casting from piers and seawalls around the Buffalo Outer Harbor with shallow-running stickbaits is another reliable big-walleye tactic.
Buffalo’s section of the Niagara River offers year-round options. The Upper Niagara holds smallmouth bass, muskellunge, and walleye around current breaks, weed edges, and rocky points. Use 3–4" swimbaits, jerkbaits, or live minnows on a bottom rig when current is strong. The Lower Niagara, a short drive downstream, is famous for trout and salmon, but even from the Buffalo side anglers can tap into seasonal runs of steelhead and lake trout traveling through the system, especially in colder months.
Fall is arguably the best overall season. Cooling water pulls smallmouth shallow again on Lake Erie reefs and breakwalls, and they feed aggressively ahead of winter. Crankbaits, jerkbaits, and football jigs worked around rock transitions and shoal edges produce numbers and size. Lake trout, brown trout, and steelhead stage off tributary mouths and along drop-offs; heavy three-way rigs with minnows or egg-pattern soft plastics catch fish when presented slowly along current seams.
Habitat and access are straightforward once you understand the layout. The Buffalo Outer Harbor features rock breakwalls, piers, marinas, and dredged channels—perfect for shore anglers targeting bass, walleye, and panfish. Look for wind-blown shorelines and riprap where bait congregates. Offshore, scattered reefs and humps in 20–50 feet hold bass and walleye; electronics are invaluable for staying on contour edges and isolated rock. In the Niagara River, focus on current breaks created by points, islands, and eddies behind structure, always keeping boat control and safety front-of-mind.
Practical tactics include carrying a mix of finesse and power presentations. On clear, calm days, downsize to light fluorocarbon leaders, small tubes, and drop-shots for pressured smallmouth. When wind kicks up and the lake gets a chop, lean on louder crankbaits and larger swimbaits to cover water. For shore anglers, a simple arsenal of 1/4–3/8 oz jigheads, 3" grub or minnow plastics, and a couple of suspending jerkbaits will catch multiple Buffalo species from spring through late fall. Matching your approach to season, depth, and wind direction is the key to consistent fishing in the Buffalo area.

If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 5 beaches and bays in this area.
