Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 15:14 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Davenport

Fishing in Davenport, Iowa revolves around Pool 14 of the Mississippi River, a diverse stretch of water with strong current, classic wing dams, vast backwaters, marinas, and shoreline structure. Anglers can launch from multiple ramps on both sides of the river and target a wide mix of warmwater species with tactics tailored to river flows, water clarity, and seasonal movements.

Spring is prime time for walleye and sauger in the Davenport area. As the water creeps into the 40s and low 50s, fish stack along current seams below dams, along channel edges, and on the upriver side of wing dams. A short, controlled drift with a 1/4–3/8 oz jig tipped with a minnow or plastic ringworm is a staple presentation. Focus on subtle current breaks and slightly deeper pockets just off the main flow. During high water, slide into flooded shorelines and inside bends where fish escape heavy current.

By late spring and summer, bass and panfish patterns are more consistent. Largemouth bass gravitate to backwater lakes, marinas, riprap banks, and laydowns, especially where there is a mix of wood and vegetation. Weightless plastics, swim jigs, and squarebill crankbaits cover water efficiently. Smallmouth bass relate more to currentβ€”rocky points, wing dams, and channel-side riprap. Target them with tube jigs, Ned rigs, and medium-diving cranks run across the upstream face of structure. Bluegill and crappie stack around docks, submerged wood, and weed edges in quieter backwaters; small jigs tipped with plastics or waxworms under a float produce steady action.

Catfishing is a Davenport strong suit from late spring through fall. Channel cats favor current edges, outside bends, and the downstream side of wing dams. Cut shad, nightcrawlers, and prepared baits fished on a simple slip-sinker rig will cover most situations. For flathead catfish, focus after dark around heavy coverβ€”brush piles, logjams, and rock piles near deep holes. Use large live baits like bullheads or sunfish on robust gear, anchoring upstream so your bait washes naturally into the structure.

Summer also brings good action for white bass and hybrids when schools push shad toward the surface. Watch for birds and surface activity along main-channel sandbars and the tips of wing dams. Small spoons, inline spinners, and 2–3 inch soft plastics burned near the surface trigger fast strikes. Freshwater drum and carp provide bonus action on bottom rigs baited with worms or corn, especially in slower side channels and backwaters.

In fall, cooling water pushes walleye, sauger, and smallmouth back onto hard-bottom structures. Jig-and-minnow combinations, blade baits, and vertical presentations in 15–25 feet of water shine when fish hold tight to the base of wing dams and channel breaks. Slow your retrieve and keep frequent bottom contact as river temperatures drop. Panfish slide to deeper edges of weedlines and channel cutsβ€”downsize to sensitive floats and light fluorocarbon leaders to tempt pressured fish.

Throughout the year, success around Davenport hinges on reading current and structure. Use electronics to locate channel edges, scour holes, and the precise upstream faces of wing dams. Adjust jig weight so it ticks bottom without dragging, and reposition until you find the softest current seam holding fish. With its mix of big-river habitat and accessible shorelines, the Davenport stretch of the Mississippi rewards anglers who stay mobile and match tactics to the river’s ever-changing mood.
