Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:23 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. Fishing Overview Denton

Denton, Texas fishing revolves around two major North Texas reservoirsโ€”Lake Lewisville to the south and Ray Roberts Lake to the northโ€”plus a network of creeks, ponds, and the Elm Fork Trinity River corridor. These systems support healthy populations of largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, white bass, and panfish, giving local anglers plenty of options within a short drive of town.

Seasonal patterns are key around Denton. In late winter and early spring, prespawn bass stack up on main-lake points, creek channel swings, and riprap near deeper water; slowly worked suspending jerkbaits, lipless crankbaits, and Carolina rigs produce well. As water warms into the 60s, bass move shallow to spawn in protected coves, backs of pockets, and flooded brush. This is prime time for wacky-rigged stickbaits, light Texas rigs, and small jigs pitched to visible cover.

By summer, both Lewisville and Ray Roberts shift to an offshore game. Bass relate to humps, roadbeds, timber edges, and main-lake points. Deep-diving crankbaits, football jigs, shaky heads, and Carolina rigs fished in 12โ€“25 feet are reliable. Early and late in the day, work topwaters along rocky banks and around marinas for schooling fish. In fall, shad-driven patterns dominate; watch for birds and surface activity and throw lipless cranks, small swimbaits, and spoons into feeding schools, especially on windy points and flats.

Crappie fishing is a standout near Denton. In spring, crappie push into shallow coves, brush lines, and riprap banks; 1/16โ€“1/32 oz jigs tipped with soft plastics or minnows under a slip float excel. The rest of the year, focus on bridge pilings, standing timber, and brush piles in 12โ€“25 feet. Vertical jigging small tubes or hair jigs right in the cover is the staple approach.

Catfish are abundant and accessible for bank and boat anglers. Channel cats bite well from late spring through early fall on stink bait, punch bait, or cut shad fished around wind-blown banks, creek mouths, and shallow flats. For bigger blue cats, target deeper ledges, river channels, and open-water structures with fresh cut bait on bottom rigs. Night fishing around marinas, riprap, and lighted docks often improves action in warm months.

Denton anglers also enjoy white bass and hybrid action on Lewisville and Ray Roberts. Look for schooling fish on main-lake points and mid-lake humps in summer and early fall. Slab spoons, tail spinners, and small chrome lipless crankbaits work vertically and cast to surface boils. When they run up tributaries in late winter and early spring, compact jigs and small grubs fished in current seams can be extremely productive.

For practical tactics, focus on wind-driven areas where bait concentrates, especially on Lewisvilleโ€™s many points and Ray Robertsโ€™ main-lake structure. Electronics are valuable for locating offshore fish and brush piles, but bank anglers can do well around parks, causeways, and bridge access points. Downsizing baits on pressured weekends, using quieter approaches, and fishing low-light periods will consistently improve catch rates around Dentonโ€™s heavily used but highly productive fisheries.
