Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:21 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview El Centro

El Centro, California sits in the heart of the Imperial Valley, surrounded by a network of irrigation canals, drains, and reservoirs that create surprisingly strong fishing in the middle of the desert. The All-American Canal, numerous Imperial Irrigation District (IID) laterals, and nearby Salton Sea system all hold largemouth bass, multiple catfish species, striped bass, tilapia, and sunfish. Most of this fishing is classic roadside canal angling: lots of access, current breaks, and structure if you know what to look for.

Seasonally, the El Centro area fishes almost year‑round thanks to mild winters and hot summers. Late winter through spring (February–April) is prime time for largemouth bass as water temps climb and fish push shallow on canal edges, rock banks, and small pockets out of the main current. Early and late in the day, bass cruise tight to reeds, riprap, and culvert mouths. Summer brings intense heat, shifting the best bite to dawn, dusk, and after dark for both bass and catfish. Fall offers a second strong window as baitfish stack in current seams and bass and stripers feed aggressively. Even mid‑winter can produce, especially for catfish, tilapia, and carp in deeper, slower stretches.

Habitat types around El Centro are dominated by canals and drains. Key areas include the main All-American Canal, larger IID canals, and connecting laterals. Look for:

  • Bends and corners where current slows and scours deeper holes.
  • Headgates, siphons, and culverts that create turbulence and ambush points.
  • Rock-lined banks (riprap) that warm quickly and attract bass and sunfish.
  • Weed edges, overhanging brush, and small inlets with reduced flow.

Largemouth bass respond well to compact, snag-resistant lures. In canals with clear to lightly stained water, throw small crankbaits, 1/4–3/8 oz spinnerbaits, and 4–5 inch soft plastics. Weightless stickbaits or Texas‑rigged worms pitched tight to the bank, especially near culvert mouths and corners, will consistently get bit. In low light, work buzzbaits or small walking topwaters parallel to the bank; many strikes happen within a rod length of shore.

Catfish are a staple target in the El Centro region, especially channel and blue catfish. Focus on deeper outside bends, scour holes below structures, and any stretch with slower, darker water. Night fishing is often most productive. Classic baits—cut shad, mackerel, chicken liver, or prepared dough baits—fished on a simple sliding sinker rig will cover most situations. Use enough weight to hold bottom in the current, and cast slightly upstream so the rig settles naturally into deeper depressions.

Tilapia, carp, and panfish provide steady action in the smaller canals and drains. For tilapia and sunfish, use light spinning tackle with size 8–12 hooks, a small split shot, and bits of worm, dough, or corn fished near edges and slow pockets. Carp patrol the same areas; freelined or lightly weighted corn, bread, or dough baits along the bank can produce powerful runs on light tackle.

Tactical tips for El Centro canals: stay mobile, fishing each spot 10–15 minutes before moving; read current and target transitions between fast and slow water; and fish low light whenever possible to beat both heat and angler pressure. With a focus on structure, current breaks, and time of day, the desert waterways around El Centro offer consistent, diverse freshwater fishing close to town.
