Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview El Paso
El Paso fishing revolves around the Rio Grande corridor, small desert reservoirs, irrigation canals and well‑stocked community ponds that keep local anglers on the water year‑round. The arid Chihuahuan Desert setting means clear water, fluctuating flows and big temperature swings, so success comes from timing outings to seasonal patterns and dialing in simple, efficient presentations.
Seasonally, spring is prime time for largemouth bass and sunfish in El Paso area lakes and ponds. As water temps climb into the 60s, bass move shallow to spawn around riprap, laydowns and concrete structure. Weightless soft plastics, compact Texas rigs and 1/4‑oz spinnerbaits fished slow along the first break from the bank catch numbers of fish. Early and late in the day, a small walking topwater or popper can draw aggressive strikes in calm pockets.
Summer pushes most species into deeper, cooler water or heavy shade. In city ponds and irrigation impoundments, focus on the upwind side where a little chop oxygenates the edges. Night fishing is highly productive for channel and blue catfish; punch baits, cut shad, chicken liver or nightcrawlers on a simple slip‑sinker rig put fish on the bank. Downsize for sunfish with tiny pieces of worm under a float around aerators, culvert mouths and shaded walls to keep kids busy.
Fall brings some of the most comfortable fishing weather in El Paso. Bass and white bass where present feed heavily on shad and small baitfish, so lipless crankbaits, small swimbaits and medium‑diving cranks worked along riprap and dam faces are consistent producers. Carp and catfish also stay active, making this a great time to fan‑cast baits from shore. Winter cools local waters quickly, but community lakes often receive periodic rainbow trout stockings, creating a seasonal trout fishery. Small in‑line spinners, salmon eggs, corn and PowerBait on light line catch trout steadily when fished near the bottom with minimal weight.
Habitat around El Paso is dominated by man‑made structure: concrete shorelines, bridge pilings, culverts, riprap, irrigation gates and canal intersections. These all concentrate current and bait, which in turn hold gamefish. On the Rio Grande itself, target gentle current seams, deeper bends, and any woody debris that survives fluctuating flows. In ponds, pay close attention to aerators, drainage inlets and any submerged brush; even a single laydown or rocky edge can hold several bass or catfish.
Effective tactics lean toward simplicity. For multi‑species action, carry:
- A medium spinning combo with 8–12 lb mono for bass, trout and general use.
- A heavier rod with 15–20 lb mono or braid and a slip‑sinker rig for catfish and carp.
- Small hooks (sizes 6–10), split shot, and clip‑on bobbers for sunfish and stocked trout.
Wind and sun angle matter in this open desert environment. Use the wind to your advantage by fishing wind‑blown banks where food gets pushed, and prioritize low‑light windows at dawn and dusk for shallow bass and cruising catfish. Dress for heat, carry plenty of water, and work methodically; El Paso’s urban and desert waters reward anglers who pay attention to subtle structure and timing.
