Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:16 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview El Paso

El Paso fishing revolves around the Rio Grande corridor, small desert reservoirs, irrigation canals and well‑stocked community ponds that keep local anglers on the water year‑round. The arid Chihuahuan Desert setting means clear water, fluctuating flows and big temperature swings, so success comes from timing outings to seasonal patterns and dialing in simple, efficient presentations.

Seasonally, spring is prime time for largemouth bass and sunfish in El Paso area lakes and ponds. As water temps climb into the 60s, bass move shallow to spawn around riprap, laydowns and concrete structure. Weightless soft plastics, compact Texas rigs and 1/4‑oz spinnerbaits fished slow along the first break from the bank catch numbers of fish. Early and late in the day, a small walking topwater or popper can draw aggressive strikes in calm pockets.

Summer pushes most species into deeper, cooler water or heavy shade. In city ponds and irrigation impoundments, focus on the upwind side where a little chop oxygenates the edges. Night fishing is highly productive for channel and blue catfish; punch baits, cut shad, chicken liver or nightcrawlers on a simple slip‑sinker rig put fish on the bank. Downsize for sunfish with tiny pieces of worm under a float around aerators, culvert mouths and shaded walls to keep kids busy.

Fall brings some of the most comfortable fishing weather in El Paso. Bass and white bass where present feed heavily on shad and small baitfish, so lipless crankbaits, small swimbaits and medium‑diving cranks worked along riprap and dam faces are consistent producers. Carp and catfish also stay active, making this a great time to fan‑cast baits from shore. Winter cools local waters quickly, but community lakes often receive periodic rainbow trout stockings, creating a seasonal trout fishery. Small in‑line spinners, salmon eggs, corn and PowerBait on light line catch trout steadily when fished near the bottom with minimal weight.

Habitat around El Paso is dominated by man‑made structure: concrete shorelines, bridge pilings, culverts, riprap, irrigation gates and canal intersections. These all concentrate current and bait, which in turn hold gamefish. On the Rio Grande itself, target gentle current seams, deeper bends, and any woody debris that survives fluctuating flows. In ponds, pay close attention to aerators, drainage inlets and any submerged brush; even a single laydown or rocky edge can hold several bass or catfish.

Effective tactics lean toward simplicity. For multi‑species action, carry:

  • A medium spinning combo with 8–12 lb mono for bass, trout and general use.
  • A heavier rod with 15–20 lb mono or braid and a slip‑sinker rig for catfish and carp.
  • Small hooks (sizes 6–10), split shot, and clip‑on bobbers for sunfish and stocked trout.
Start by covering shoreline quickly with moving baits, then slow down with bottom‑contact lures or bait once you locate fish. In the clear, pressured waters common around El Paso, lighter line, smaller hooks and natural‑colored baits consistently draw more strikes.

Wind and sun angle matter in this open desert environment. Use the wind to your advantage by fishing wind‑blown banks where food gets pushed, and prioritize low‑light windows at dawn and dusk for shallow bass and cruising catfish. Dress for heat, carry plenty of water, and work methodically; El Paso’s urban and desert waters reward anglers who pay attention to subtle structure and timing.

The Best Fishing Spots around El Paso

Ascarate Lake

El Paso’s urban hub for family-friendly fishing, Ascarate Lake is regularly stocked and produces channel catfish, rainbow trout (seasonal), largemouth bass, bluegill, and sunfish; shoreline access, fishing piers, and rental/hand-launched craft make it easy to target weed edges, docks, and drop-offs, with early morning and evening bites best in summer and cool-weather trout action drawing crowds similar to Alumni Pond in Las Cruces.

Caballo Lake

Just downstream of Elephant Butte, Caballo Lake fishes smaller but steady for walleye, white bass, striped bass, channel/blue catfish, and largemouth; anglers run points, submerged roadbeds, and river-channel bends, with spring walleye runs, summer white bass schooling, and catfish after dark—when the Butte gets windy or crowded, Caballo’s coves and tailwater current excel, as do nearby Percha Dam eddies.

Rio Grande (El Paso stretch)

Through El Paso, accessible banks and shallow runs of the Rio Grande give up channel catfish, common carp, sunfish, and the occasional bass; low-flow periods concentrate fish in deeper bends and confluences, while higher flows favor drifted baits and small craft like kayaks—urban access points make it a quick session alternative to driving to Ascarate Lake or Elephant Butte Reservoir.

Leasburg Dam

At Leasburg Dam State Park north of Las Cruces, the Rio Grande tailwater creates riffles and pools that hold channel catfish, carp, sunfish, and seasonal bass; anglers work seams, plunge pools, and calm eddies with bait or small lures, especially effective at dawn/dusk and during stable flows, with a quieter feel than the busier Caballo Lake and easy day-trip distance from El Paso.

Balmorhea Lake

West of Fort Davis, Balmorhea Lake (Toyah Lake) is a desert reservoir known for largemouth bass, channel catfish, crappie, and sunfish; anglers probe flooded brush, points, and windblown banks, with spring prespawn bass shallow, summer night catfishing productive, and crappie relating to structure—an alternative getaway to Elephant Butte Reservoir for El Paso anglers seeking quieter water.

Brantley Lake

Near Carlsbad, Brantley Lake offers broad, windswept basins and creek arms that hold largemouth and smallmouth bass, white bass, walleye, and catfish; wind-driven bites line up on points and riprap, while deeper jigging and trolling patterns shine in summer—often paired with trips to Lake Avalon or Red Bluff Reservoir for multi-day El Paso escapes.

Red Bluff Reservoir

Straddling the Texas–New Mexico line on the Pecos River, Red Bluff Reservoir is noted for striped bass, white bass, channel/blue catfish, and carp; anglers troll or cast along rocky points and river channels, while shore anglers target drop-offs and inflow areas—more rugged than Elephant Butte Reservoir but rewarding for trophy cats and occasional big stripers.
