Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Elk River
The Elk River offers a versatile fishing experience with a mix of cool, fast riffles, broad pools, and slower reservoir-influenced stretches that hold a wide diversity of gamefish. Anglers target smallmouth bass, walleye, crappie, trout, and catfish throughout the year, adjusting tactics to water temperature, clarity, and flow. Access ranges from bank-friendly bridges and public parks to boat ramps ideal for jet boats, kayaks, and small bass rigs.
Seasonal patterns are key to consistent Elk River success. In early spring, water levels often rise and cool flows push smallmouth, walleye, and sauger into current breaks below riffles and in the heads of pools. Jigs tipped with soft plastics, hair jigs, and small crankbaits fished tight to the bottom produce well. As waters warm into late spring, bass and panfish move shallow to gravel bars, chunk rock, and laydowns, where suspending jerkbaits, weightless soft plastics, and finesse jigs shine.
Summer on the Elk River is dominated by current and shade. Smallmouth bass stack along rocky shorelines, mid-river boulders, and submerged ledges where oxygen-rich water funnels food. Fish early and late with topwater walkers, poppers, and buzzbaits, then shift to bottom-contact presentations like Ned rigs and tube baits once the sun is high. In slower, deeper holes, expect channel and flathead catfish on live or cut bait, especially at night when they roam for prey.
Fall brings some of the most predictable fishing of the year. Cooling water pulls baitfish together, and bass, walleye, and hybrid striped bass often school up, chasing shad in main-river eddies, points, and necked-down current seams. Medium-diving crankbaits, swimbaits, and lipless cranks let you cover water quickly to find active schools. Trout in tailwater or cool tributary sections feed heavily, responding to small spinners, in-line spoons, and natural drifting presentations.
Habitat variety is a hallmark of the Elk River. Look for three primary zones: fast riffles with broken rock (prime for smallmouth and trout), moderate runs with weed edges and wood (excellent multi-species water), and deep bends or pools where catfish, drum, and wintering bass stack up. Reading the current is crucial—fish almost always hold where fast water meets slack, such as behind boulders, along inside bends, and on the downstream side of islands and gravel bars.
Tactically, scale your approach to water clarity. In clear conditions, downsize line, choose natural-colored baits, and make longer casts from a low profile position. In stained or high water, upsize line and lures, lean on darker profiles or chartreuse patterns, and focus on obvious current breaks close to the bank where fish seek refuge. Kayaks and small boats allow you to hop between prime stretches, but many productive spots are reachable from shore if you systematically work seams, eddies, and visible structure.
Electronics help in the deeper reservoir-like sections of the Elk River, revealing submerged timber, old channel edges, and bait concentrations. However, in the more free-flowing portions, observation and precise casting catch more fish than elaborate gear. Watch for surface dimples, baitfish flickers, and subtle current lines. Rotating through a few confidence baits—a bottom jig, a moving bait like a crank or spinner, and a topwater—lets you quickly dial in the mood of Elk River fish on any given day.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 1 beaches and bays in this area.
