Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

October Fishing Report
October brings a strong fall bite around Fort Belvoir on the tidal Potomac. Cooling water and receding grass push bait into creek mouths and points. Expect active largemouth bass along outside weed edges in Gunston Cove, Accotink Bay, and Dogue Creek, especially on a falling tide. Early and late windows are productive, with fish sliding shallow at first light and pulling to breaks as the sun rises.
Cover water with lipless cranks, squarebills, and spinnerbaits over scattered grass; switch to jigs or Texas-rigged plastics when the tide slackens. Schooling striped bass occasionally blitz edges of main-river flats; keep a small silver spoon or soft jerkbait ready. For numbers, deep bends hold blue catfish—fresh cut bait on bottom rigs works best—while docks and laydowns produce crappie on small jigs.
Expect clearer water after north winds and stained conditions after rains; the bite generally improves with moving water and overcast skies. Watch for nervous bait flipping along grasslines to locate active fish.
Top tip: Time your spots around the tide—hit shallow grass on the last two hours of falling water, then shift to nearby drains and first hard cover as the tide turns to keep contact with feeding fish.
