Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 15:32 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

Next Full Moon in ~15 days on 29th July
New Moon is generally a very productive time for fishing. Dark nights mean that many predators feed more actively during daylight hours. The combined gravity of sun and moon during New Moon days has a stronger effect on all water bodies, leads to increased food availabilty and hence better fishing.
  • Distance to earth:
    366,294 km
    Proximity:
    92.5 %
We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Marquette

Fishing in Marquette, Michigan centers on the cold, clear waters of Lake Superior and a network of tributary rivers and inland lakes. Anglers can switch from trolling for salmon and lake trout to wading for steelhead or probing weedlines for pike and bass, all within a short drive of downtown Marquette.

Seasonal patterns drive most success. In spring, shore and small-boat anglers score on coho and chinook salmon, brown trout, and lake trout along the Lake Superior shoreline, river mouths, and harbors such as Marquette’s Lower Harbor. Cold nearshore water brings salmonids tight to structure. Casting spoons, crankbaits, and spawn bags at river mouths and along breakwalls is productive, while small boaters run shallow stickbaits and spoons behind in-line boards in 10–40 feet.

Late spring and early summer see a strong steelhead and rainbow trout presence in tributaries like the Carp River, Chocolay River, and Dead River. Focus on deeper runs, tailouts, and seams. Drift beads, spawn, or small jigs under a float, or swing small streamers and spinners in slightly stained water. As summer progresses and lake temperatures warm, lake trout slide deeper off Marquette’s rocky points and reefs. Trolling downriggers and divers with spoons and flashers targeting 80–200 feet is standard, while jigging heavy spoons or tube jigs vertically over humps works when fish stack tight to bottom.

Warm summer months are ideal for smallmouth bass, pike, and panfish on nearby inland lakes and sheltered bays. Look for rocky points and mid-lake rubble for smallmouth, working tube baits, Ned rigs, and jerkbaits along the edges. For pike, target weedbeds, creek inlets, and drop-offs with large spoons, spinnerbaits, and suspending minnow baits. Early and late in the day, topwater plugs draw aggressive strikes. Panfish—perch, bluegill, and crappie—relate to cabbage and coontail beds; present small jigs tipped with plastics or live bait under a float just above the weeds.

Fall in Marquette brings another surge of salmon and lake-run browns to river mouths and lower pools. Cover water with spinners, crankbaits, and skein or spawn sacs. On the big lake, massive lake trout and salmon key on bait schools around steep breaks and offshore structure; run larger spoons, plugs, and flasher-fly combinations at varying depths to locate active fish.

Winter opens a strong ice fishing season on inland lakes around Marquette. Walleye and pike frequent classic structure—points, inside turns, and weed edges in 8–20 feet. Set tip-ups with lively minnows at varying depths and jig spoons or rattle baits nearby to draw fish in. Perch and panfish hold on deeper flats and subtle humps; scale down to small tungsten jigs and finesse plastics to tempt pressured fish. On cold, stable weather stretches, some anglers also target burbot and lake trout where safe ice and access allow.

Key tactical tips include fishing low light for shallow salmonids and walleye, staying mobile to find active schools on Lake Superior, and matching lure size to water clarity—smaller, more natural baits in ultra-clear conditions, larger and brighter offerings in wind-churned or stained water. Using quality electronics, paying attention to wind-driven current, and thoroughly working transitions between rock, sand, and weed edges will consistently boost catch rates in the Marquette area.

If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 2 beaches and bays in this area.
