Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 15:0 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

Fishing Overview Martinsburg

Martinsburg, WV sits in a prime pocket of the eastern Panhandle, giving anglers quick access to the Potomac River, Shenandoah River, Sleepy Creek Lake, and numerous coldwater creeks. The mix of rocky smallmouth water, fertile impoundments, and stocked trout streams means there’s a realistic bite here in every month of the year, whether you’re wading, bank fishing, or launching a jon boat or kayak.

On the big-water side, the Potomac River near Shepherdstown, Williamsport, and Harpers Ferry is the headliner for smallmouth bass, walleye, and channel catfish. Focus on rocky ledges, current seams, and submerged boulders. In spring, work slow-rolled 3–4 inch soft plastic grubs, tubes, and small swimbaits along the bottom in eddies just off the main current. As water warms in late May and June, smallmouth slide shallower; early and late in the day, throw topwater poppers and walking baits over gravel bars and along riprap banks, then shift to finesse jigs and Ned rigs when the sun gets high.

The Shenandoah River, a short drive south of Martinsburg, fishes similarly but with more grass and slightly softer current in many stretches. In summer, target grass edges, island heads, and the downstream side of ledge drops. Weightless soft plastics, buzzbaits at dawn, and 1/4 oz swim jigs cover water efficiently. Catfish anglers should anchor just above deep outside bends at night and present cut bait or live bluegill on simple slip-sinker rigs; look for depths where fast current breaks into slower, swirling water.

Sleepy Creek Lake, west of Martinsburg, is a key still-water option. This relatively shallow, stump-filled lake holds largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and chain pickerel. In spring, probe the backs of coves and flooded timber with spinnerbaits and Texas-rigged soft plastics, keeping your rod high to avoid constant hang-ups. During summer, bass often suspend around deeper standing timber and the old creek channel; count down lipless crankbaits or slow-roll a single Colorado-blade spinnerbait just ticking the tops of the cover. Crappie stack around laydowns and submerged brushβ€”tight-line small tubes or minnows just above the wood rather than dropping directly into it.

Coldwater anglers around Martinsburg often look to Opequon Creek and nearby mountain streams for trout. In early spring and late fall, drift small live bait or 1/16–1/8 oz inline spinners through deeper runs and pools, working from the tailout upstream. As water clears and fish get pressured, downsize to single eggs, nymph-style jigs, or small soft plastics on light line, making long casts and staying low and out of sight. Brook and brown trout key on current breaks behind boulders, root wads, and undercut banksβ€”cast slightly above the target and let the offering swing naturally into the strike zone.

For multi-species action close to town, the canal pools, backwaters, and feeder creeks along the Potomac provide bluegill, rock bass, crappie, and carp. A simple bobber-and-worm rig works for kids and casual anglers, while more tactical anglers can sight-fish carp with hair rigs and sweet corn, especially in late spring when fish cruise the shallows. Travel light with a small box of hooks, split shot, and a couple of jigs; much of this fishing involves walking, exploring, and casting to visible structure and current edges.

Across seasons, Martinsburg anglers do best by watching water levels, clarity, and temperature. Rising, stained water on the Potomac and Shenandoah often pushes bass shallow and tight to coverβ€”switch to darker, bulkier baits with some vibration. During low, clear summer flows, think stealth: longer leaders, natural colors, smaller baits, and longer casts. In lakes and ponds, prioritize low-light periods, wind-blown banks, and any visible cover. With its variety of habitats within a short drive, Martinsburg rewards anglers who match their tactics to current river conditions and stay mobile until they locate active fish.
