Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Mount Clemens
Mount Clemens fishing is driven by its direct connection to the Clinton River and quick access to Lake St. Clair, one of the Midwest’s most consistent multi-species fisheries. From public shore spots in town to small-craft launches that connect to massive lake structure, anglers can effectively target everything from trophy smallmouth and muskie to easy-action panfish within minutes of downtown.
Seasonal patterns are key. In early spring, warming water in the Clinton River and connected canals pulls in pre-spawn smallmouth, largemouth, pike, and walleye. Focus on slow-moving current seams, marinas, and canal mouths with jigs tipped with soft plastics, blade baits, and suspending jerkbaits. By late spring and early summer, fish spread onto nearby Lake St. Clair flats and breaks. Smallmouth bass stack on rock, gravel, and subtle contour changes in 8–15 feet; drifting tubes, dropshot rigs with goby-style baits, and Ned rigs is highly effective. Summer also brings strong weedline bites for largemouth, pike, and panfish in the many canals and near-shore weedbeds accessible from Mount Clemens.
Fall may be the most underrated period. Cooling water pulls baitfish and predators back toward the river mouth and adjacent lake structure. This is prime time for heavier presentations: 1/2–3/4 oz football jigs, big spinnerbaits, and swimbaits for smallmouth and pike, plus trolling crankbaits and inline spinners for roaming walleye. Muskie anglers out of Mount Clemens work expansive weed edges, breaks, and open-water bait schools with large crankbaits, rubber baits, and trolling spreads; focus on clear water with nearby depth changes.
Winter fishing in the Mount Clemens area depends on ice conditions on connected canals and protected Lake St. Clair bays. When safe ice forms, sight-fishing for bluegill, perch, and crappie in 5–10 feet is common, using small tungsten jigs, plastics, and occasional live bait. Subtle, high-precision jigging and hole-hopping to stay on active schools are more important than large baits.
Habitat and access define the most consistent patterns:
- Clinton River in town: Current seams, bridge pilings, and deep outside bends hold smallmouth, rock bass, catfish, and seasonal steelhead/salmon. Use compact jigs, small crankbaits, and live bait under slip floats for tight urban spots.
- Canals and marinas: Key for spring and summer largemouth, panfish, and pike. Pitch wacky worms, small jigs, and finesse swimbaits along docks, seawalls, and emergent weeds.
- Lake St. Clair flats and breaks: Short runs from Mount Clemens launches open up vast flats with rock, scattered weed clumps, and subtle transitions. Drifting or controlled-drifting while dragging tubes, dropshotting, or casting jerkbaits covers water efficiently.
Tactical tips for Mount Clemens include matching line and tackle to the open, clear nature of Lake St. Clair—8–12 lb fluorocarbon for smallmouth finesse, and 40–65 lb braid plus leaders for muskie and pike. Always watch wind forecasts; even modest wind can quickly change boat positioning and presentation angles. Electronics help locate bait and rock patches on the flats, but inshore, a simple approach of working visible structure—bridges, seawalls, docks, and breaks in vegetation—will consistently put fish in the net around Mount Clemens.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 2 beaches and bays in this area.
