Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Oroville
Fishing in Oroville, California revolves around two primary waters: Lake Oroville and the Feather River below Oroville Dam. The clear, deep reservoir is famed for numbers of spotted bass and dependable landlocked salmon fishing, while the tailwater and lower Feather hold trout, steelhead, and seasonal striped bass. Understanding how water levels, clarity, and seasonal bait movements shape fish behavior is the key to consistent success.
Spring is prime time for bass and salmon on Lake Oroville. As the water warms into the 50s and low 60s, spotted bass and largemouth move shallow onto gravel pockets, secondary points, and flooded brush. Search with small swimbaits, finesse jigs, and 3–4 inch soft plastics on ned rigs or drop-shots in 5–20 feet. In slightly stained water, reaction baits—spinnerbaits and shallow-running crankbaits—produce bigger bites around wind-blown banks. Landlocked Chinook and trout push higher in the water column; slow-troll spoons or rolling shad/anchovies 15–40 feet down along the main river channel and major creek arms, targeting bait balls on your electronics.
Through summer, Oroville turns into a vertical and deep-structure fishery. Spotted bass school up over 30–60 feet of water, especially off long tapering points, humps, and submerged treetops. Drop-shot worms, small dart-head jigs, and spoons worked directly beneath the boat are highly effective. Early and late, work topwaters over main-lake points and bluff ends—walking baits and poppers can pull quality spots and the occasional largemouth. Salmon and trout push deeper as surface temps climb, making downriggers or lead-core line valuable tools; troll 40–80 feet with slim-profile spoons in natural shad or baitfish patterns. Night fishing with cut bait or dip-bait rigs along flats and creek mouths can produce steady channel catfish action.
In fall, baitfish migrate into the creek arms and mid-lake pockets, and Oroville’s spotted bass follow tightly behind. This is one of the best times for power techniques: rip smaller jerkbaits, burn medium-diving crankbaits, or fish underspin swimbaits through suspended schools. Watch for surface activity where bass push shad to the top; have a small topwater or fluke-style soft plastic ready for quick casts. Salmon and trout often move shallower again, making them more accessible to flat-line trolling in low-light windows. Crappie and sunfish cluster around submerged brush and vertical cover; probe them with small tubes or marabou jigs under slip bobbers.
Winter fishing in Oroville rewards patient anglers who focus on deep, stable structure. Spotted bass often stack on steep rock walls, ledges, and channel turns in 30–70 feet. This is prime time for finesse: tiny worms, shad-shaped baits, and small spoons fished slowly and vertically. Electronics are critical—don’t fish until you see arcs or bait clouds. On the Feather River, colder months can still produce trout and occasional steelhead; focus on deeper runs, seams, and tailouts with spoons, spinners, or bait, working slowly in low, clear water.
Habitat and access are straightforward. Lake Oroville features rocky shorelines, flooded timber, long points, and deep creek channels, all accessible from multiple boat ramps and shoreline pull-offs. The Feather River below the dam provides wade and small-boat opportunities in classic runs and riffles. Match your approach to the water: finesse and vertical presentations on the clear reservoir; slightly heavier line, more current-oriented lures, and natural drifts in the river. Adjusting to water level changes and clarity—common in Oroville—will keep you on fish throughout the year.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 3 beaches and bays in this area.
