Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Saint Charles
Fishing in Saint Charles, Missouri revolves around the Missouri River and a cluster of small to mid-sized lakes and conservation areas dotted around the city. The Missouri River itself is the main draw for big catfish, drum, and rough fish, while nearby lakes like Blanchette Landing backwaters, lakes in St. Charles County parks, and conservation areas toward Weldon Spring and Busch Wildlife provide comfortable bank access and strong bass, crappie, panfish, and seasonal trout opportunities.
Seasonal patterns drive most success. In early spring, warming water pulls catfish shallower on the Missouri River—focus on inside bends, flooded willows, and mouths of creeks after rains. Cut shad, skipjack, or fresh carp chunks on 3–6 oz sinkers will hold in current; fish just off the main flow seams. Largemouth bass in nearby lakes stage along the first drop from shore; jerkbaits, lipless cranks, and small jigs excel until the spawn. By late spring, crappie stack along riprap, fishing piers, and laydowns—vertical jig 1/16–1/32 oz marabou or tube jigs around any visible wood.
Summer on the Missouri River near Saint Charles is prime time for trophy blue catfish and flatheads. Target deep outside bends, scour holes below wing dikes, and the downstream side of bridge pilings. Use heavy rods, 50–80 lb braid, and abrasion-resistant leaders. Big live sunfish or goldfish tempt flatheads at night; big cut bait stays more consistent for blues. Midday, shift to lakes and ponds for shade-oriented largemouth bass—pitch Texas-rigged plastics and jigs to docks, weed edges, and downed trees. Bluegill and sunfish action is fast for kids using small hooks, bits of worm, or tiny jigs under a float along grassy banks.
Fall brings some of the most predictable fishing around Saint Charles. Cooling water pushes shad shallow in coves and along riprap, and bass, white bass, and school-size catfish follow. Work crankbaits and spinnerbaits parallel to rocky banks in lakes and along the shoreline revetment on the river. In clearer conservation lakes, finesse worms and Ned rigs shine when the bite gets pressured. Catfish slide onto shallower flats adjacent to deeper holes in the evening—fan-cast multiple rods at varying depths until you locate feeding fish.
Winter river fishing focuses on the deepest, slowest holes accessible from boat ramps near Saint Charles. Use smaller cut baits and be patient—one good bite can be a giant. In area lakes that receive seasonal rainbow trout stockings, light spinning tackle with 4–6 lb line, small spoons, inline spinners, and PowerBait-style dough near the bottom will produce through the cold months. Fish slow and keep presentations subtle in the clear, cold water.
Habitat and tactics vary by waterbody. On the Missouri River, read current: seams, eddies behind wing dikes, and submerged sandbars all concentrate fish. In lakes and ponds, think edges—weed lines, riprap, timber, and depth transitions. Keep a simple kit: medium-heavy river gear with no-roll sinkers and circle hooks for cats; medium spinning outfits with a mix of jigs, plastics, and a few reaction baits for lakes. Mobility is key around Saint Charles—if a spot doesn’t produce in 30–45 minutes, move to the next piece of structure until you connect.
