Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Sarasota
Fishing in Sarasota, Florida centers around a diverse mix of shallow grass flats, deep passes, bridges, docks, and Gulf reefs. Sarasota Bay, Big Pass, New Pass, and the nearshore reef line collectively provide year-round opportunities for inshore, nearshore, and offshore anglers. Local guides focus on snook, redfish, seatrout, tarpon, mackerel, snapper, and grouper, with seasonal runs that can be dialed in by watching water temps, tides, and bait migrations.
Seasonal patterns drive much of the action. Spring brings warming water and bait schools onto the flats and beaches. Snook and redfish feed aggressively on Sarasota Bay’s grass edges and mangrove shorelines, while Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, and cobia push just off the beaches and around nearshore reefs. Late spring through early summer is prime time for Sarasota tarpon along the Gulf beaches and passes, with fish traveling the bars early and late in the day.
Summer sees strong dawn and dusk bites in the heat. Snook stack around bridges, passes, and lighted docks where current funnels bait. Night fishing with live scaled sardines or shrimp around dock lights can be excellent. Offshore, calm seas open long runs to reefs and ledges for red grouper, gag grouper, snapper, and amberjack by dropping live pinfish, pilchards, or cut bait.
Fall fishing in Sarasota is driven by bait runs and cooling water. Schools of whitebait and glass minnows trigger fast action with Spanish mackerel, kingfish, and bonito off the beaches and near channel markers. In the bay, seatrout and redfish feed heavily on the flats around potholes and sandbars. Winter concentrates fish around structure: sheepshead, snapper, and black drum stack up on bridges, rock piles, docks, and nearshore reefs, readily eating shrimp or fiddler crabs on light tackle.
Key habitats include the expansive grass flats from Longboat Key to Siesta Key, where spotted seatrout, pompano, and ladyfish prowl. Target 3–6 feet of water with broken grass and sandy potholes. Mangrove shorelines and oyster bars hold snook and redfish, especially on high incoming tides when fish push tight to cover. In the passes (Big Pass, New Pass), look for mackerel, pompano, sharks, and tarpon in season, focusing on strong moving tides.
Effective techniques in Sarasota revolve around live bait, artificial lures, and simple bottom rigs. A live whitebait, pilchard, or shrimp under a cork or free-lined on light fluorocarbon is a staple for snook, trout, and redfish on the flats. Drifting jigs tipped with shrimp over structure is deadly for pompano and flounder. For nearshore mackerel and kingfish, slow-troll or drift live baits around bait schools and reef edges, watching for bird activity and surface busts.
Tactical tips: In clear Sarasota water, downsize leader and hooks for more strikes, especially on pressured flats. Time inshore trips around good moving water—mid to late stages of the tide often fish best. When fishing docks and bridges for snook and sheepshead, present baits tight to pilings and let them sink naturally. Offshore, mark structure carefully with your electronics and anchor or position up-current so baits drift back into the strike zone. Matching your strategy to Sarasota’s seasonal movements and distinct habitats is the key to consistent action.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 12 beaches and bays in this area.
