Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:18 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Stephenville

Fishing around Stephenville, Texas centers on small- to medium-sized reservoirs, public ponds, and fishable stretches of the Brazos River within an easy drive. The area’s warm climate keeps fish active for much of the year, with peak action for largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie from early spring through late fall. Clear to lightly stained water is common, so downsized baits, natural colors, and quiet presentations routinely outperform brute-force tactics.

Seasonal patterns around Stephenville follow classic North Texas timing. In late winter and early spring, prespawn largemouth and spotted bass push shallow on north banks, protected coves, and the backs of creek arms. This is prime time for 3–4 inch soft-plastic swimbaits, lipless crankbaits, and suspending jerkbaits worked over secondary points and along riprap. As water warms into the 60s, bass fan beds in protected pockets; weightless stickbaits and Texas-rigged creature baits pitched to visible cover are highly effective.

By summer, bass and crappie slide deeper, relating to brush piles, standing timber, channel bends, and man-made structure. Electronics are a major advantage on area lakes; once you find bait and hard breaks, hop a 3/8–1/2 oz football jig or Carolina rig down the slope. Night fishing becomes productive for both bass and catfish, especially around lit docks, bridges, and riprap. In fall, shad push shallow in creeks and along windblown banks, triggering aggressive feeding. This is the time to cover water with squarebills, small spinnerbaits, and walking topwaters at first and last light.

Habitat and where to look near Stephenville includes flooded timber, rocky banks, clay points, and numerous stock tanks. On clearer lakes, concentrate on:

  • Primary and secondary points with chunk rock or scattered brush
  • Creek channel edges and bends adjacent to flats
  • Docks, ramps, and bridge pilings that create permanent shade
  • Any visible laydowns or stumps near deeper water

On the Brazos River and similar flows, focus on current breaks: outside bends with deeper scour holes, logjams, and the downstream side of rock bars. Catfish stack below riffles and at the heads and tails of deep pools, while bass often hold tight to undercut banks, root wads, and isolated boulders.

Techniques and tactical tips are fairly straightforward but reward precision. For bass, a 1/8–1/4 oz Texas rig with a compact creature bait in green pumpkin or watermelon covers most situations. In clearer water, switch to lighter line (8–10 lb fluorocarbon) and smaller profiles. When fish are pressured or the sun is high, dragging a finesse jig or shaky head slowly along the bottom around brush piles and points will outproduce faster lures.

Crappie fishing is best by vertically jigging small tubes or marabou jigs over brush piles and standing timber in 10–20 feet, especially in late spring and early summer. Use electronics to sit directly over the cover and hold the bait nearly still with subtle quivers. For catfish, punch bait or stinkbait on slip-rigs around creek mouths, submerged timber, and ledges is productive, while cut shad or bluegill targets larger blue and flathead catfish in deeper river holes. Windy days can be an advantage: drift-fishing with cut bait along channel edges and main-lake flats will help you locate roaming catfish until you dial in a depth and contour.

With thoughtful attention to seasonal movement, water clarity, and structure, the ponds, lakes, and rivers around Stephenville consistently yield quality bass, slab crappie, and heavyweight catfish for anglers who adapt their tactics to local conditions.
