Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Terre Haute
Terre Haute, Indiana fishing revolves around the Wabash River, several productive reservoirs, and a network of strip-pit lakes that hold surprisingly good numbers of bass, panfish, and catfish. The Wabash forms the backbone of the areaβs fishing, while nearby lakes and pits provide clear-water options and strong spring and fall bites.
Seasonally, spring is prime time around Terre Haute. Rising Wabash River levels and warming water push catfish, drum, and rough fish shallow along current breaks, creek mouths, and flooded wood. Bass anglers do well in local lakes by targeting north-facing coves and shallow flats with spinnerbaits, lipless crankbaits, and Texas-rigged creature baits. Crappie stage on wood and brush in 6β10 feet, then push shallow to spawn; pitch small jigs under fixed or slip bobbers tight to cover.
Summer fishing focuses on early and late windows. On the Wabash, catfish dominate, with channel cats hitting cut shad, nightcrawlers, and stink bait in outside bends and along riprap, while bigger flatheads favor live bluegill or creek chubs placed near logjams and deep holes. In lakes and strip-pits, largemouth bass shift to weed edges, standing timber, and deep points. Work soft plastics, jigs, and deep-diving crankbaits along dropoffs, and switch to topwater frogs and walking baits at dawn and dusk over matted vegetation.
Fall brings some of the most consistent multi-species action around Terre Haute. Cooling water concentrates shad, and predators follow. Cast medium crankbaits, swimbaits, and spinnerbaits along rocky banks, main-lake points, and river eddies to connect with bass, walleye, and white bass. Crappie slide back to mid-depth brush; vertical jigging over submerged structure or spider-rigging with minnows is highly effective. Catfish remain active, especially when river levels bump up after autumn rains.
Winter fishing can still be productive for patient anglers. On milder days, focus on deeper river holes and the slowest current seams for channel cats using cut bait on simple bottom rigs. In lakes, bass and panfish hug steep structure; fish slowly with small jigs, blade baits, and finesse plastics near vertical cover. When ice forms safely on smaller pits and ponds, downsized tungsten jigs tipped with waxworms or spikes produce bluegill and crappie around submerged brush and weedlines.
Habitat variety is a key strength of the Terre Haute area. The Wabash River offers classic big-river structure: sandbars, wing dams, rock piles, and wooded banks. Read the river by looking for current seams, eddies behind islands, and subtle depth changes where active fish stack up. Local strip-pits and reclaimed mine lakes tend to be clear and deep with sharp breaks, making them ideal for vertical presentations, suspending jerkbaits, and finesse rigs on light line. City and county park lakes provide easier shoreline access with planted cover, fishing piers, and maintained banks, perfect for shore-bound anglers targeting bluegill, catfish, and stocked trout.
Tactical tips for Terre Haute anglers include carrying a range of weights for changing Wabash River flows, using electronics in deeper lakes to find bait and key structure, and keeping presentations adaptableβfrom power fishing moving baits in stained river water to subtle finesse approaches in the clear strip-pits. Focus on low-light periods, current breaks, and any intersection of cover and depth change to consistently locate fish around Terre Haute.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
