Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 15:3 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Toms River

Toms River in New Jersey is a productive fishery that transitions from freshwater upstream to brackish and near-saltwater as it feeds into Barnegat Bay. This mix creates distinct zones for striped bass, fluke, weakfish, panfish, and perch, with year-round opportunities if you time tides and seasons correctly. Most anglers focus on access points like bridges, bulkheads, marinas, and nearby creeks that dump bait into the main channel.

Spring is prime time for striped bass and white perch. In March and April, target white perch and holdover stripers in the upper river around deeper bends, marinas, and any structure that breaks current. Use bloodworms, grass shrimp, or small pieces of clam on hi-lo rigs for perch and smaller bass. As water warms into May, schoolie stripers push downriver, shadowing herring and bunker. Fish dusk and dawn around bridges and channel edges with 3–5 inch soft plastics on 3/8–1/2 oz jigheads, small swimming plugs, and bucktails worked slowly with the tide.

Summer shifts the action toward fluke, snapper bluefish, and mixed back-bay species. In the lower Toms River closer to Barnegat Bay, focus on channel edges, drop-offs, and bends where cooler water and moving tides keep fish active. Drift or slowly hop 1/2–1 oz bucktails tipped with Gulp! or spearing along the channel slope for fluke, keeping contact with bottom. Around docks and bulkheads, snapper blues stack up July through early September; tiny metals, snapper poppers, or spearing under a float are deadly, especially when the tide is moving and baitfish are visible flicking on the surface.

Fall brings the best striped bass run and some of the heaviest feeding of the year. Bait flushes out of the creeks and marshes into the river, and bass pin them along sod banks, bridge abutments, and channel corners. Focus on the last of the incoming and first of the outgoing tide, casting shallow-running plugs, 4–6 inch soft plastics, and bucktails tight to structure, then sweeping them with the current. Look for birds, nervous bait, and current seams; subtle rips around pilings often hold feeding fish. Light to medium spinning tackle with 15–20 lb braid and 20–30 lb fluorocarbon leaders covers most situations.

Winter slows things down but doesn’t shut it off. On milder days, anglers still pick winter flounder and holdover stripers in deeper, slower sections of the river. Concentrate on the deepest holes and marinas where water temps are slightly higher and current is reduced. Use small baits pinned to bottom and fish slowly; bites are often subtle taps rather than hard strikes.

Tactical tips for Toms River include matching your approach to tide and clarity. In stained water, bulk up baits and use darker soft plastics that silhouette better. When the water is clear and calm, scale down leaders and go with more natural-colored lures and smaller presentations. Always fish where current meets slack water—inside turns, pilings, and the edges of channels are consistent producers. Cover water methodically, adjust jig weight so it just ticks bottom in the flow, and be ready to move with the tide rather than camping in one spot all day.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
