Fishing Overview for Lake Washington

This large urban lake is known for coastal cutthroat trout, prolific yellow perch, and quality smallmouth bass; anglers troll for cutthroat in cooler months and target bass around structure in late spring through summer, with plentiful shore access near Gene Coulon Park and Seattle’s Lakeside parks.

Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:54 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. The graph below shows you the 3 hourly weather progression over the next 7 days. Scroll the graph left or right to see more.

Fishing Overview Washington

Washington fishing is defined by variety: coastal saltwater, Puget Sound, big rivers like the Columbia and Snake, glacier-fed streams, and thousands of lakes. Understanding seasonal movements and matching tactics to habitat is the key to consistent success across the state.

Salmon and steelhead drive much of Washington’s river and saltwater fishing. In Puget Sound and the coastal ports, trolling herring or anchovies behind flashers is the go-to for Chinook and coho; run gear 20–80 feet down along bait schools and current seams, and adjust depth often until you contact fish. In river systems, drift fishing or bobber-dogging with cured roe, shrimp, or jigs is highly effective for salmon, while steelhead respond well to soft beads, yarnies, and 3–4 inch worms pegged above small hooks on fluorocarbon leaders.

Washington’s lakes offer excellent trout and kokanee action. Spring and fall are prime for stocked rainbow trout in lowland lakes—troll small spoons, wedding rings, or spinners tipped with corn or worm pieces at 1–1.5 mph, or fish PowerBait off the bottom from shore near drop-offs. High-elevation waters in the Cascades and Olympics hold wild rainbow, cutthroat, and brook trout; pack in small inline spinners, 1/16–1/8 oz spoons, and dry flies like Adams or Elk Hair Caddis for clear, shallow alpine lakes.

Kokanee fishing is strong in major impoundments and natural lakes. Focus on the top 15–50 feet of the water column, especially at first and last light. Troll small hoochies or wedding ring-style rigs behind dodgers at 0.8–1.2 mph, tipping hooks with white shoepeg corn scented lightly. As summer progresses, watch your sonar closely—kokanee school tightly, so staying on marked pods is critical.

Warmwater opportunities for largemouth and smallmouth bass are expanding statewide. In weedy, shallow lakes, target largemouth around docks, pads, and wood with weightless stickbaits, frogs, and Texas-rigged plastics. Columbia and Snake River smallmouth relate to current breaks, boulder fields, and riprap; 3–4 inch tube baits, drop-shot rigs with finesse worms, and small crankbaits worked along structure catch fish from spring through fall.

Walleye in the Columbia and Potholes region favor subtle presentations near bottom. Drift or slowly troll worm harnesses behind bottom bouncers along tapering flats and channel edges in 10–35 feet. In summer, dawn and dusk trolling with crankbaits across long points and humps can produce larger fish; keep your offerings close to bottom and vary color between natural and brighter patterns until you dial in a preference.

In Puget Sound and along the outer coast, bottomfish like lingcod and rockfish hold tight to structure—reefs, ledges, and wrecks. Vertical jigging 4–8 oz metal jigs or fishing large soft-plastic grubs on heavy lead heads directly over structure is productive. Keep contact with bottom, but lift and drop steadily to avoid snagging while still triggering strikes.

Whatever species you target in Washington, success comes from reading water and watching your electronics. Focus on edges—temperature breaks, current seams, weedlines, and depth transitions—and adjust depth, speed, and lure size systematically until you start getting bites.

If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
