Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 9:57 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Parramatta

Fishing around Parramatta centres on the upper tidal reaches of the Parramatta River, stretching from Rydalmere and Silverwater right up to the weirs near the Parramatta CBD. This is classic urban estuary water: narrow, tidal and structure-rich, with rock walls, bridge pylons, mangroves and shallow mudflats holding good numbers of bream, flathead, mulloway and estuary perch. Land-based anglers are well catered for along parks, shared paths and ferry wharves, while kayaks and small boats can work the harder-to-reach edges and channel drops.

Seasonally, late spring through early autumn is prime time. In the warmer months, bream and flathead push well upstream, feeding aggressively on prawns, baitfish and crabs around dawn, dusk and at night. Mulloway follow the bait, and the deeper holes around Silverwater, Rydalmere and under the main bridges can produce fish after dark, especially around tide changes. Through winter, fishing slows but bream and luderick still hold along rock walls and deeper edges, and tailor move through on the bigger tides.

Structure is the key in Parramatta’s estuary. Bridge pylons, ferry wharves, retaining walls and mangrove-lined banks all concentrate fish. Work the shadow lines of bridges in low light for bream, estuary perch and the occasional mulloway. Flathead favour sandy patches beside weedbeds and mudflats, and will often sit along the edge of the main channel waiting for bait to wash past. Any obvious drop-off from the bank into deeper water, especially near a bend in the river, is worth a few well-placed casts.

Lure fishing is highly effective here. For bream and estuary perch, small 2–3 inch soft plastics on light jigheads, tiny hardbody crankbaits and subtle creature baits pitched tight to structure work well. Make long, accurate casts parallel to rock walls and wharves and retrieve slowly, pausing often. For flathead, step up to 3–4 inch paddle-tails or jerk shads, hopping them along the bottom on the edges of sandbanks and channels. Mulloway are best targeted with larger soft plastics or soft vibes fished deep around bridge pylons and obvious holes, especially at night around the turn of the tide.

Bait fishers should focus on fresh offerings. Hawkesbury prawns, pilchard pieces, squid strips, chicken soaked in pilchard oil, and live or freshly caught poddy mullet are proven producers. Use light running sinker rigs for bream and whiting on the flats and slightly heavier gear for fishing deeper bridge holes after dark. A small berley trail of mashed bread or pellets can help hold bream and trevally along the walls and near the wharves, but keep it sparse to avoid overfeeding the fish.

Tactically, timing makes a big difference on this system. The last of the run-in and the first of the run-out tides are generally the most productive, especially when they coincide with low light. Work up-current edges of structure first, then shift to the downstream side as the tide strengthens. Because the water is often clear and fish can be wary, especially on sunny days, fish as light as conditions allow with fluorocarbon leaders and keep noise and lights to a minimum around built-up areas. Moving steadily, covering water and rotating between structures will consistently produce more fish than sitting in one spot waiting for the bite to come to you.

The Best Fishing Spots around Parramatta

Sydney Harbour

Iconic and productive, Sydney Harbour holds kingfish, tailor, salmon (winter runs), trevally, flathead, bream and squid. Structure-rich shorelines, wharves and deep channels fish well on tide changes; summer topwater action for tailor/bonito contrasts with spring squid and autumn bream. Popular nearby land spots include Clifton Gardens, Bradleys Head and Blues Point, while boats work edges, markers and current lines across the main basin.

Parramatta River

Running from Parramatta down to the Harbour, this estuary transitions from brackish to salt and produces bream, flathead, mulloway (jewfish), whiting and seasonal tailor. Bridges, drop-offs and pontoons around Silverwater, Rhodes and Drummoyne fish well, with prawns and small baitfish drawing predators on the making tide; summer and early autumn are prime for surface whiting and flathead on the flats.

Clifton Gardens Beach

A classic land-based spot in Mosman with a netted swimming area and adjacent wharf/rocky edges that hold squid, trevally, bream, luderick and roaming kingfish. Dawn and dusk around the pylons are reliable; spring–summer sees squid and trevally, while warm currents bring school kings. It’s also a great backup when the main Sydney Harbour basin is windy.

Iron Cove

A sheltered inner-harbour bay between Rozelle and Drummoyne that fishes well from shorelines, seawalls and the Bay Run foreshore for bream, flathead, whiting and tailor. Work the shallows and drains on a flooding tide; summer prawns and mullet schools bring in predators, while winter sees tailor and trevally. Nearby options include Rozelle Bay and Drummoyne Wharf.

Hen and Chicken Bay

Known for flats and weed beds around Abbotsford and Five Dock, this bay produces whiting, bream, flathead and luderick. Rising tides push fish onto the edges; surface lures and shallow divers excel in summer, while weed baits tempt luderick along rock walls. It links easily with nearby Canada Bay and Five Dock Bay for a mobile session.

Lane Cove River

Meandering through bushland to the harbour, the Lane Cove River offers quiet fishing for bream, flathead, estuary perch and luderick, with the lower reaches seeing tailor and school kingfish. Fish eddies, mangrove edges and bridge pylons on turning tides; kayaks and small boats shine, and shore access is good at Figtree Bridge and Linley Point.

Wharf's or Jetties are good places to wet a line and meet other fishermen. They often produce a fresh feed of fish and are also great to catch bait fish. As they are often well lit, they also provide a good opportunity for night fishing. There are 5 wharf(s) in this area.

Ryde Wharf - 8.30247623854km , Putney Wharf - 9.17864593897km , Long Point Wharf - 10.20459885583km , Bradbury Wharf - 10.35715079559km , Abbotsford Wharf - 10.70645752507km

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
