Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 11:26 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

Next Full Moon in ~15 days on 30th June
New Moon is generally a very productive time for fishing. Dark nights mean that many predators feed more actively during daylight hours. The combined gravity of sun and moon during New Moon days has a stronger effect on all water bodies, leads to increased food availabilty and hence better fishing.
  • Distance to earth:
    363,340 km
    Proximity:
    99.4 %
We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Darwin

Darwin fishing revolves around a mix of tropical estuaries, mangrove-lined creeks, coastal flats and productive offshore reefs and shoals. The city is a genuine barramundi hub, but it also offers excellent reef and pelagic fishing within easy range of local boat ramps such as East Arm, Dinah Beach and Nightcliff. Land-based anglers are well catered for at the Darwin Waterfront, Stokes Hill Wharf, Nightcliff Jetty and Lee Point.

Seasonal patterns are driven by the Wet and Dry. The build-up (typically October–December) and the run-off (roughly February–May) are prime times for barramundi as monsoonal rains push bait from floodplains into main channels. During run-off, focus on creek mouths, drains and pressure points in systems like the Adelaide River, Mary River, Finniss and Daly River, as well as Darwin Harbour’s arms. The cooler, stable Dry Season brings clearer water offshore, firing up Spanish mackerel, tuna, queenfish and cobia on coastal headlands, reef edges and bait schools.

Darwin’s habitat types each demand specific tactics. In mangrove creeks and harbour arms, work snags, rock bars and eddies for barramundi, mangrove jack, golden snapper and cod. Shallow coastal flats and headlands hold queenfish, trevally and blue salmon, especially on moving tides. Further out, reefs and shoals such as Charles Point, Fish Reef, Fenton Patches and Bass Reef produce golden snapper, black jewfish, coral trout, red emperor and nannygai.

Practical techniques for barramundi around Darwin start with casting soft plastics, hardbody minnows and soft vibes tight to structure. Use 20–30 lb braid with 40–60 lb leader to cope with heavy cover and abrasive gill plates. In dirty run-off water, choose large, bright lures with strong vibration; in clearer harbour water, more natural colours and smaller profiles can outfish bulkier offerings. Trolling deep-diving hardbodies along mangrove edges, rock bars and channel drop-offs is effective when searching larger areas.

For reef fishing, most local crews use 30–50 lb braid with 60–80 lb leader, paternoster or single-hook running rigs, and baits such as fresh squid, mullet, sardines or pilchards. Position the boat so baits sit just down-current of structure. Short, accurate drifts over marks often outproduce long, uncontrolled drifts. Deeper rubble patches and isolated bommies away from heavy boat traffic frequently hold less pressured fish and better-sized golden snapper and nannygai.

Pelagic tactics off Darwin focus on locating bait. Watch for birds, bait balls on the sounder and surface bust-ups. High-speed metal slugs, stickbaits and trolled skirts work well for mackerel and tuna. Troll lures along current lines, pressure points and reef edges at varying depths until you find the strike zone, then mark the area and work it thoroughly.

Land-based anglers can score quality fish with a few strategic adjustments. Fish dawn, dusk and night for barramundi and jewfish around lit structure, wharves and rock bars. Use metal lures and poppers for queenfish and trevally on clean, sweeping beaches and rocky outcrops during the run-in tide. Always factor in strong tides: plan sessions around the first and last of the run, when water movement is enough to stimulate feeding but not so fierce that presentation becomes impossible.

The Best Fishing Spots around Darwin

Stokes Hill Wharf

Right beside the CBD, Stokes Hill Wharf offers deep water and strong tidal flow that attract queenfish, GTs, mackerel, golden snapper, and the occasional black jewfish; fish the edges of the structure and light lines of current during neaps, with bait and metals working well—nearby harbour markers and shoals toward Darwin Harbour and Cullen Bay often push bait past the wharf on the run.

Mindil Beach

Famous for sunsets and accessible sands, Mindil Beach produces queenfish, trevally, and roaming threadfin salmon on the flood tide, with small tides in the Dry offering clearer water for soft plastics and metals; work gutters and current seams toward the rocky edges that lead into Fannie Bay and around the points toward East Point during the afternoon sea breeze.

East Point

Rugged rock ledges and fringing reef make East Point a hot spot for land-based spinning and bait fishing for queenfish, GTs, mackerel, and reefies like golden snapper; the Dry season’s neap tides reveal productive bommies and drains, while the Build-up often sees bait stack along the headland—keep an eye on surface bust-ups pushing toward Fannie Bay and Darwin Harbour.

Fannie Bay

A sheltered bay bordered by flats and reefs, Fannie Bay fishes well for queenfish, trevally, mackerel, and inshore reef species like golden snapper, with the Dry season’s clear water suiting sight-casting and the Build-up bringing bait to the surface; boats work reef patches and drop-offs, while shore casters cover gutters from Mindil Beach to East Point.

Lee Point

A long headland with beaches and rock ledges, Lee Point is renowned for spinning up mackerel, longtail tuna, queenfish, and trevally when bait schools ride the tide lines; Dry season mornings and neap tides are prime for metals and stickbaits, with fish pushing along the gutters toward Casuarina Beach and back toward Nightcliff Jetty on the turn.

Cullen Bay

Adjacent to the marina, Cullen Bay’s rock walls and nearby harbour markers hold queenfish, trevally, mackerel, and occasional golden snapper; troll or cast along the current edges on the run-in, with small neaps in the Dry offering clearer water, and look for surface feeds spilling from the harbour toward Darwin Harbour and Fannie Bay.

Buffalo Creek

An estuarine creek with a popular ramp and land-based platforms, Buffalo Creek produces barramundi, mangrove jack, threadfin salmon, and blue salmon; the Wet season and early Dry see barra working drains and eddies on the falling tide, while the Build-up brings bait to the mouth—many anglers also hop out to nearby flats and headlands toward Shoal Bay by boat.

Shoal Bay

A broad, shallow bay east of town that shines for barramundi, threadfin salmon, and roaming queenfish, Shoal Bay comes alive during the Wet and runoff periods when drains pour into the flats; work edges, snags, and tidal creeks on neaps for clearer water, and move with bait schools pushed in from Buffalo Creek and along the eastern flats toward the bay’s channels.
