Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 10:57 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. The graph below shows you the 3 hourly weather progression over the next 7 days. Scroll the graph left or right to see more.

Fishing Overview Bowen

Bowen’s fishing revolves around a mix of clear inshore reefs, sandy beaches and mangrove-lined creeks, all within short range of town. The dry season from May to September brings cooler water, calm weather and prime inshore reef fishing for coral trout, sweetlip and emperor, while the warmer months fire up the creeks for barramundi, mangrove jack and threadfin. Light winds in winter and early spring also open the offshore grounds to Spanish mackerel, longtail tuna and cobia.

Inshore reef country is Bowen’s backbone. Rocky headlands such as Horseshoe Bay, Rose Bay and around Queens Beach hold coral trout, sweetlip, stripeys and trevally. Fish the last of the run-in and first of the run-out tide, working the pressure edges where current pushes onto rock and reef. Soft plastics in 4–5 inch jerk shad patterns, 20–40 g metal vibes, and lightly weighted pilchards or strip baits are reliable options. Keep leader around 30–40 lb fluorocarbon; go heavier when the trout and cod are burying you in the bommies.

Beaches and shallow sand flats around Queens Beach and Kings Beach produce whiting, flathead and bream. Focus on the top half of the tide when water pushes up over the flats, especially early morning and late afternoon. Small long-shank hooks baited with yabbies, beach worms or peeled prawns on a light running sinker rig are the most consistent. For lure fishing, 70–100 mm stickbaits and shallow-diving hardbodies worked along the first drop-off will pick up flathead and the odd queenfish.

Bowen’s creeks and estuaries come alive with summer heat. Systems such as the Don River and smaller mangrove creeks west and north of town hold barramundi, king threadfin, jacks and grunter. Tide timing is critical: fish the last two hours of the run-out and first couple of the flood, concentrating around drains, rock bars and mangrove points. In warm, dirty water, use 4–6 inch paddle-tail plastics, prawn imitations and shallow-diving hardbodies in natural or gold hues. Skip lures deep into the shade to reach jacks, and work them back with short, sharp twitches.

Offshore, isolated reef patches and shoals wide of Bowen produce coral trout, redthroat emperor, nannygai, red emperor and cobia. Sound around until you see solid bait and fish arches on the sounder, then anchor or power-drift. Drop paternoster rigs with 6/0–8/0 hooks and 40–60 lb leaders using squid, pilchard or fresh fillet baits. Early morning is prime for Spanish mackerel; slow-troll rigged gar, wolf herring or deep-diving hardbodies along the pressure edges of reefs and bait schools, keeping lures in the 4–8 m zone.

Bowen’s land-based options are strong for travelling anglers. Rock ledges near Horseshoe Bay and the harbour walls produce queenfish, trevally, school mackerel and the occasional longtail tuna. Carry metal slugs from 20–60 g and fast-retrieve them through surface bust-ups. For night sessions, focus on lit areas around the harbour where baitfish congregate; unweighted pilchards and live baits slow-sunk into the light line regularly draw strikes from mackerel, trevally and fingermark. Adjust leader and drag settings to match the ever-present possibility of a big, reef-hardened fish.

The Best Fishing Spots around Bowen

Bowen Jetty

The historic Bowen Jetty is the town’s signature land-based spot, producing queenfish, trevally, mackerel (school and Spanish in winter runs), grunter, and night-time squid; tide changes and bait schools pushing past the pylons are prime, and boaties also work lures along the structure or drift baits between the jetty and Port Denison.

Horseshoe Bay

A picturesque cove framed by granite, Horseshoe Bay fishes well from the rocks and beach for coral trout, spangled emperor, cod, trevally, and seasonal mackerel; calm mornings suit light lures around the headlands, while small boats and kayaks work the bommies between here and Grays Bay.

Queens Beach

Stretching for kilometres, Queens Beach offers productive gutters for whiting, flathead, and bream, with grunter and blue salmon appearing on bigger tides; the northern end toward the Don River mouth can see queenfish and mackerel in cooler months when baitfish gather.

Grays Bay

Popular with families and lure fishers, Grays Bay produces trevally, queenfish, mackerel, and reefies like sweetlip and coral trout around the rocky points; dawn surface bites can be hot, and small boats hop between inshore reefs linking to Horseshoe Bay.

Rose Bay

A sheltered bay with rocky margins and sand patches, Rose Bay yields bream, flathead, sweetlip, and cod, with school mackerel on winter tides; work small plastics across the sand edges and lightly weighted baits along the stones toward Cape Edgecumbe.

Don River

The Don River and its mouth fish well on building tides for barramundi (wet season peaks), mangrove jack, threadfin, grunter, and flathead; land-based anglers work drains and rock bars near Queens Beach, while small boats troll hardbodies and vibe deeper bends upstream.

Euri Creek

A classic estuary south of town, Euri Creek holds barramundi, mangrove jack, finger-mark (golden snapper), grunter, and mud crabs; fish the run-out around snags and drains, with prawns and mullet schools drawing predators, and small tinnies exploring feeder creeks toward Edgecumbe Bay.

Port Denison

Bowen’s harbour, Port Denison, offers breakwall and marina-edge fishing for queenfish, trevally, bream, and night-time squid; pelagics run past the leads in winter, and boaters slow-troll spoons and hardbodies between the harbour entrance and Bowen Jetty.

Cape Edgecumbe

The granite headland of Cape Edgecumbe links several bays and is a prime rock and small-boat venue for spangled emperor, coral trout, cod, trevally, and winter mackerel; work metal slices on the points and soft plastics along wash zones between Rose Bay and Murray Bay.

Stone Island

Just off Bowen, Stone Island’s fringing reefs and rubble patches hold coral trout, grass emperor, sweetlip, and roaming queenfish and mackerel; boats hop the island’s lee side on lighter winds, with productive drifts between here and Port Denison.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
