Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Rockingham
Rockingham fishing revolves around a mix of protected inshore water, island-studded reef country and accessible beaches that all hold fish at different times of year. Autumn and early winter are prime for big pink snapper pushing into Cockburn Sound and the shallow reef systems, while summer brings whiting, herring, squid and blue swimmer crabs into skinny water. Spring often fishes well for inshore skippy, tailor and early-season squid, and the cooler months are best for chasing larger snapper and mulloway in deeper channels and along reefy drop-offs.
Inshore, target King George and sand whiting on the sand patches between weed beds inside Cockburn Sound and along the Rockingham foreshore. Drift these areas with light 6โ10 lb gear, a running sinker to size 4โ6 long-shank hooks and baits like squid strips, bloodworms or pipis. For yellowfin whiting in the shallows, wade the flats at first light using small surface lures or lightly weighted worms; long, quiet casts and a slow walk-the-dog retrieve are the key tactical edges here.
The weed beds off Safety Bay, Palm Beach and around Garden Island are reliable for southern calamari and cuttlefish. Work the ribbon weed edges with 2.5โ3.0 sized squid jigs in natural prawn or pilchard colours. Focus on low-light periods or cloudy days, and add short, sharp rips followed by long pauses to keep the jig in the strike zone. When you find a patch, hit the GPS and repeat drifts across the same contour lines to build a bag quickly.
Rockinghamโs beaches and rock walls offer consistent land-based action. Tailor and herring school up around dusk; cast metal slices or small stickbaits into the gutters and along current lines, working them back with a medium-fast retrieve. For Australian salmon during their run, look for birds and bait pushing tight to the sand, especially around the Penguin Island area. Heavy metals and shallow-diving minnows in the 30โ60 g range cover the water well and handle the wind.
Offshore, the broken ground and reef edges in 20โ60 m outside Garden Island and Five Fathom Bank produce pink snapper, dhufish, baldchin groper and Samson fish. Use your sounder to locate bait clusters and hard bottom before dropping baits or jigs. For snapper and dhuies, run paternoster rigs with 40โ60 lb leaders and fresh strip baits or octopus. Samson fish respond aggressively to vertical jigs; work 100โ250 g metals with long, fast pumps to trigger strikes around structure and bait balls.
For a more subtle approach, slow-pitch jigs and soft plastics are increasingly effective in Rockinghamโs deeper water. Drift across likely contours with 20โ30 lb braid, matching jig weight to depth and current so you stay near vertical. Short lifts and controlled drops keep the lure fluttering where snapper, skippy and breaksea cod hold. Mark productive drifts and repeat passes from the same angle of current to maintain boat control and lure presentation.
Throughout the Rockingham area, success comes from reading the wind and swell, working the tide changes and using your electronics to find bait and structure. Rotate between whiting and squid on the flats, pelagics off the beaches and reef species offshore to stay on active fish year-round.
