Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 15:33 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Charlottetown

Charlottetown sits on a protected harbour that opens directly onto the Northumberland Strait, giving anglers quick access to productive saltwater structure, tidal rivers, and nearby beaches. The fishing calendar is long, beginning with early spring trout in local streams and rolling into summer runs of mackerel, striped bass, and world‑class bluefin tuna just offshore.

From April into early May, most effort is focused inland on trout. Small creeks and rivers within an easy drive of Charlottetown hold brook, brown, and rainbow trout. Cold, clear water and slow flows make light line and stealth critical—think 4–6 lb fluorocarbon, small spinners, and compact spoons worked across current seams. On bright days, downsizing to single‑hook spinners and drifting bait under a small float through undercut banks and deeper pools is often more effective than covering water quickly.

By late May and June, water temperatures rise and the estuaries around Charlottetown Harbour and the Hillsborough River begin to shine. This is prime time for striped bass cruising edges of mudflats, channel drops, and bridge causeways. Focus around tide changes. Casting 4–6 inch soft plastics on jig heads, slender minnow plugs, or bucktail jigs into the current and letting them swing across the seam will draw strikes. At night or in low light, topwater walkers and poppers can produce explosive action along lit shorelines and wharf edges.

Summer brings a mixed fishery right in Charlottetown Harbour. Schools of Atlantic mackerel and pollock roam the channels and wharf lines, often within easy casting distance from piers and marina areas. Sabiki rigs, small diamond jigs, or simple metallic spoons worked with a sharp jigging action are all you need. When fish are finicky, replace multi‑hook rigs with a single small jig to avoid spooking the school. Bottom rigs baited with strips of mackerel or clam will pick up flounder and tomcod on sandy patches down‑tide of structure.

Offshore, the waters south of Charlottetown are famous for giant bluefin tuna. Trolling and chumming are the dominant methods, with boats keying on bait concentrations and current edges in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The most successful captains watch for temperature breaks, bird activity, and surface marks on their sounders, then circle those zones patiently. Heavy tackle and precise boat handling are essential, and most visitors access this fishery through local charter operators who know the seasonal movements of the fish.

Fall cools the water and re‑ignites inshore fishing. Striped bass often feed more aggressively in September and October, especially on overcast, breezy days with moving tide. Switch to slightly larger baits—paddle‑tail swimbaits, metal lip swimmers, and medium bucktails—to imitate larger prey. At the same time, mackerel, herring, and gaspereau can stack in deeper harbour channels. Vertical jigging directly under the boat or under schools marked on sonar is more efficient than blind casting.

Through the shoulder months, focus on finding the intersection of current, depth change, and food. Around Charlottetown this means working channel edges, pier corners, and river bends where bait is funneled. Keep a close eye on tides and wind direction; even a slight shift can move fish from the top of a flat to the adjacent drop. Bring a compact selection of jigs, soft plastics, and small metals, and be ready to switch quickly as water clarity, current speed, and bait size change throughout the day.

The Best Fishing Spots around Charlottetown

Charlottetown Harbour

The city’s working waterfront is a classic spot for summer mackerel runs, with easy shore access along the boardwalks and jetties near Victoria Park and Peake’s Wharf; small boats and kayaks also work the channels for striped bass at dusk and dawn. Tidal currents concentrate bait where the harbour meets Hillsborough Bay, and the inner reaches can produce flounder and seasonal smelt in cooler months.

Hillsborough River

Flowing into Charlottetown Harbour, this broad tidal river offers spring and fall shots at striped bass on the flats and channels, plus sea‑run brook trout higher up toward Mount Stewart. Shore fishing is popular at pull‑offs and bridges around Stratford and along the causeway, while small boats drift rips and points where salt and fresh water mix.

Brackley Beach

Long sandy bars and troughs make Brackley a favorite surfcasting venue for cruising striped bass at dawn and dusk, with roaming schools of mackerel in midsummer close to the outer bar on calm days. The proximity to Covehead Harbour and easy parking draw consistent crowds when the wind and tide line up.

Hillsborough Bay

This wide, shallow bay south of Charlottetown collects bait over sand flats and channels, producing reliable striped bass action from late spring through fall and incidental flounder. Shore anglers work accessible stretches near Tea Hill and Stratford, while small boats drift rips and seams on moving tides.

Stanhope Beach

Adjacent to dune systems in PEI National Park, Stanhope’s bars and cuts offer classic surf structure for striped bass, with occasional mackerel schools pushing close on calm summer evenings. Anglers spread along the beach and near the points toward Dalvay and Covehead Harbour when tides are moving.

North River

Just west of the city, this tidal arm features bridges, bends, and marsh edges that hold striped bass and seasonal white perch, with sea‑run brook trout toward fresher reaches. Shore access around the bridge and causeway is convenient, while small boats work eddies and drop‑offs on the flood and ebb.

Tracadie Bay

A sheltered lagoon system north of Charlottetown, Tracadie’s channels and oyster beds gather baitfish and attract roaming striped bass, with summer mackerel near the outer points. Shore anglers use causeways and beaches near Grand Tracadie, while boats slip along edges where deeper cuts meet the flats.

Point Prim

The prominent headland southeast of the city creates rips and current seams that can stack up striped bass and occasional mackerel on fair‑weather tides. Anglers spread along rocky ledges near the lighthouse, casting into wash lines that form where the point meets Hillsborough Bay and the Northumberland Strait.
