Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 9:19 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Blenheim

Blenheim’s mixed coastline, sheltered sounds and nearby rivers create distinct seasonal windows for different species. Spring and summer are prime for snapper in the shallow reefs and bommies around the Marlborough Sounds; late spring to early autumn also brings reliable kingfish and surface-feeding schools of kahawai. Autumn and winter often turn attention to deeper-water species like tarakihi, john dory and hapuku, and winter can be strong for blue cod in structured kelp and reef areas. Freshwater anglers targeting the Wairau River and local backwaters find their best trout fishing in spring and autumn when flows and insect activity produce takeable dry-fly and nymph action.

Habitat around Blenheim ranges from estuarine flats and muddy channels to kelp forests, rocky reef, and steep drop-offs. Estuaries and sheltered bays hold flounder, mullet and small kahawai; reef edges and pinnacles are snapper magnets; deep gutters and ledges off sound shores hold bigger tarakihi and groper. In freshwater, runs, riffles and deep pools in the Wairau and tributaries concentrate brown and rainbow trout.

Common techniques for inshore saltwater: for snapper, use a mix of burley, fresh bait (pāua not advised here but pillies, squid, mussel), and a running-ball sinker or two-hook paternoster rig fished tight to reef edges in 4–15m. Soft plastics around kelp edges and shallow reefs will tempt trevally and smaller snapper; consider 2–3" paddletails on 2/0–4/0 jigheads. For kingfish, livebaiting with small kahawai or slimies and long leaders (60–100lb leader) is effective; metal jigs and fast retrieves work well on roaming fish, and poppers can be devastating on surface feeders during calm evenings.

Deeper-water anglers should fish vertical jigs and bait on adjustable sinker rigs along drop-offs in 20–60m to find tarakihi and hapuku. Use sounder marks to locate terraces and bait schools; anchor or drift up-current so baits sweep along structure. For gurnard and john dory, smaller hooks and squid/mullet strips fished near bottom on light snaps will increase bites.

Shore and estuary tactics: target headlands and wharves at dawn/dusk for kahawai and trevally on metal lures or surface poppers; beachcasting with a heavy sinker and whole pilchard or strip baits will catch surf snapper. In estuaries, quiet presentation and light leaders produce more flounder and mullet hookups. Freshwater tactics for trout around Blenheim favour wet flies and small nymphs in spring, attractor dries and small streamers in low-light conditions, and lightweight spinning gear with 3–7g spoons for anglers who prefer casting metal lures.

Tactical tips: read the tide—fish often stack on the down or change; use a sounder to identify structure and bait; vary retrieve speed for jigs to find the trigger point; carry a mix of live and dead bait plus a selection of metals and soft plastics; when fishing clear water, step back from the edge and use longer casts and lighter leaders. With the variety of habitats around Blenheim, matching presentation to depth and structure is the quickest route to consistent success.

The Best Fishing Spots around Blenheim

Wairau Bar

The famous surfcasting spit at the mouth of the Wairau River is a Marlborough staple for kahawai schools, with snapper, gurnard, and rig in the warmer months and the odd kingfish cruising the edge on settled days. Work the channels along the bar on a rising tide; when baitfish are present, action can be fast. It’s an easy-access spot close to Cloudy Bay and a benchmark location for local surfcasters.

Wairau River

Running across the Wairau Plains to the sea, the river holds wild brown trout throughout its course, with sea-run fish pushing up in spring and early summer. The lower and middle reaches offer easy-access riffles and pools for spin or fly, and the river stays clear enough to sight-fish on many days. It’s the go-to freshwater option near town, before the flow fans out toward Wairau Bar.

Queen Charlotte Sound

This sheltered Marlborough Sound is renowned for mixed inshore fishing: blue cod, snapper, kahawai, tarakihi, and summer kingfish along points and current lines. Boats work structure, reefs, and channel edges, while shore anglers do well from accessible points and wharves. Baitfish gather around moorings and lighted areas after dark, with squid a common bonus near Picton Harbour and Waikawa Bay.

Picton Harbour

Right in town, the sheltered harbour offers easy wharf and shoreline access for spotties, mackerel, kahawai, and evening squid around the lights, with the occasional trevally and john dory. Small boats and kayaks can work the harbour edges and nearby points for snapper and blue cod on calm days. It’s a convenient, productive option connected directly to Queen Charlotte Sound.

Waikawa Bay

A popular launch and sheltered bay near Picton, Waikawa offers reliable inshore action for snapper on dusk, schooling kahawai, and night-time squid around marina lights, with summer kingfish patrolling nearby points. It’s a prime jumping-off point for boat missions into Queen Charlotte Sound, yet still fishes well from the shore and breakwaters when conditions are calm.

Rarangi Beach

An accessible shingle surf beach north of Blenheim, Rarangi is a trusted surfcasting spot for kahawai year-round, with snapper, gurnard, rig, and occasional elephant fish in late spring through summer. Fish the deeper gutters on a pushing tide, and look for bird activity that often signals baitfish moving along the beach toward Port Underwood.

Cloudy Bay

Stretching from the White Bluffs southward, Cloudy Bay provides long beaches and nearshore structure that produce kahawai, snapper, and gurnard for surfcasters, with small boats picking windows to work current lines and bait schools. Summer and early autumn see the most activity, especially near the river mouth at Wairau Bar when baitfish are thick.

Whites Bay

A scenic cove over the hill from Rarangi, Whites Bay offers clean water and a mix of sandy and rocky ground for shore-based fishing. Expect kahawai and snapper in settled summer conditions, with moki and gurnard possible around the edges and gutters. It’s a sheltered alternative to the open surf of Rarangi Beach when swell is moderate.

Pelorus Sound

The extensive waterways of Pelorus Sound are well known for structure-oriented fishing: blue cod on reefy points, snapper in bays and channels, tarakihi on deeper edges, and summer kingfish around current-swept headlands. Mussel farms often concentrate baitfish, attracting predators. While boat access opens most options, there are productive shore spots near Havelock and roadside bays.

Karaka Point

A classic land-based ledge on the scenic drive between Picton and Waikawa, Karaka Point drops quickly into deep water that holds snapper, blue cod, kahawai, and roaming summer kingfish. Work baits or soft-baits along the current lines and eddies, or fish evenings when bait schools push close from Queen Charlotte Sound toward Picton Harbour.
