Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 9:47 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

Next New Moon in ~2 days on 14th July
New Moon is generally a very productive time for fishing. Dark nights mean that many predators feed more actively during daylight hours. The combined gravity of sun and moon during New Moon days has a stronger effect on all water bodies, leads to increased food availabilty and hence better fishing.
  • Distance to earth:
    363,488 km
    Proximity:
    99.1 %
We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

Tide Coefficient at 09:25 pm is 110

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. The graph below shows you the 3 hourly weather progression over the next 7 days. Scroll the graph left or right to see more.

Fishing Overview Hamilton

Seasonal patterns: In Hamilton the fishing calendar follows the Waikato Riverโ€™s temperature and flow cycles. Spring is prime for whitebait runs and rising water brings trout and eels into feeding mode; summer heats up carp and perch activity in shallow margins and weedbeds; autumn cooling sharpens trout responses and can concentrate fish on predictable runs and drop-offs; winter often favours deep-water tactics and big slow-moving baits for eels and carp. Spring flows from upriver hydro releases can concentrate fish and create short windows of intense actionโ€”plan sessions around stable water if possible.

Habitat types: The Hamilton area contains a mix of riverine runs, backwaters, eddies, open lake shoreline and vegetated margins. Key structure includes drop-offs from shallow flats into deeper channels, log jams and willow-lined banks, braided side-channels, boat ramps and reed beds around Hamilton Lake (Lake Rotoroa) and downstream braids toward Karapiro. Carp and perch favour warm, weedy shallows and marginal lily pads; trout use faster seams, undercut banks and deeper pools with current breaks; eels sit in holes and structure, often nocturnally active near root tangles or rock groynes.

Common techniques: For trout, classic approaches are dry-fly and nymph setups on upstream beats, streamer work through current seams, and spin-fishing with small crankbaits, soft plastics and inline spinners in darker or stained water. Use sink-tip or weighted nymph rigs to reach deeper runs on overcast days. Carp anglers do well with surface and ledger tacticsโ€”floating crust baits or slow-sinking boilie-style baits in warmer monthsโ€”and light running ledger rigs in cooler water. Eels respond to oily fish baits, strips and whole baits presented near structure at dusk and night. Perch and rudd take small softbaits, micro-jigs and small spinners around weed edges. Whitebait species (inanga, kลaro, banded kลkopu) are encountered in spring during upstream migration in small side-streams and margins.

Tactical tips: Read the water firstโ€”look for seams where current drops, marginal snags, and the shadow lines created by riprap and vegetation. Early morning and late evening are often best for trout and carp; dusk to night is prime for eels. When targeting trout on the Waikato near Hamilton, concentrate on mid-channel seams and near eddies where drifting nymphs or streamers can hold in the strike zone. Use lighter leaders and smaller profiles in clear water; switch to brighter, punchier lures in tannin-stained or higher flows. For carp, change presentation size and scentโ€”try crust, sweet corn or bread on a weedless hook and fish quietly from the bank. Around boat ramps and popular shore-access points, try a short stealthy cast to the margins rather than heavy coverage across open water. Finally, adjust retrieve speed to water temperature: faster in warm months, slow and erratic in cold water to mimic lethargic prey.

The Best Fishing Spots around Hamilton

Ngarunui Beach

The long, sandy sweep at Ngarunui Beach near Raglan produces steady surfcasting for kahawai, snapper and gurnard when sand gutters form; fish the incoming tide and low-light periods, and be ready to cast metals into workups when birds pinpoint bait schools.

Raglan Harbour

Sheltered and productive, Raglan Harbour (Whฤingaroa) is famous for summer runs of snapper and year-round kahawai, with gurnard, trevally, and occasional kingfish around channel edges and current lines; fish the banks and mussel beds on a moving tide by boat, or work the wharf, sandflats and channel mouths from shore.

Lake Karapiro

Close to Cambridge, Lake Karapiroโ€™s hydro lake edges and inflowing streams hold quality rainbow and brown trout along with perch; troll along drop-offs, jig around points, or spin and fly-fish the evening rise, with best action in cooler months and at dawn/dusk in summer.

Waikato River

Flowing through Hamilton, the Waikato River offers accessible bank and small-boat fishing for urban anglers targeting shortfin/longfin eels, perch, rudd, and abundant catfish; focus on back-eddies, bridge pylons and warm, slow margins, with dusk and nighttime producing consistent bites.

Manu Bay

Just south of Raglan, Manu Bayโ€™s rocky points and kelp lines are renowned for land-based missions to snapper and cruising kingfish, while small boats work close-in foul and current seams; late spring through autumn with a light swell and clean water is prime.

Kawhia Harbour

A short drive from Otorohanga, Kawhia Harbourโ€™s channels, banks and entrance area fish well for snapper, kahawai, gurnard, and seasonal kingfish; drift soft-baits along channel edges by boat or bait-fish from accessible shore spots on the turn of the tide.

Lake Arapuni

Upstream of Waipapa, Lake Arapuni is a scenic hydro lake known for solid rainbow and brown trout plus perch; troll or harl along steep margins and river arms, or target inlets and wind lanes with soft-baits and fly, with cooler months and overcast days often best.

Lake Ngaroto

Close to Te Awamutu, Lake Ngaroto is an easy-access peat lake supporting tench, rudd, and perch; work the reed margins and drop-offs from shore or small craft, with calm mornings and late afternoons ideal for float-fishing or light spinning.
