Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Wellington
Wellington is a compact, varied fishing ground where micro-climates and current lines in Cook Strait concentrate fish. Seasonal patterns are distinct: spring warms nearshore reefs and starts the snapper bite around Kapiti and the southern harbour, summer brings consistent kahawai runs and surface feeding kingfish and trevally along the Kapiti and Wellington south coast, while autumn and early winter are prime for deeper snapper and tarakihi on cooler-water drop-offs and for targeting gurnard and rig over sand. Freshwater anglers find reliable brown and rainbow trout flows in the Hutt and smaller Wairarapa streams, with early season spring runs and stable summer dry-weather tactics.
Habitat types around Wellington range from shallow estuarine flats and mussel beds inside Wellington Harbour to rocky reefs and kelp forests around Red Rocks, Taputeranga Marine Reserve boundary areas, and the Kapiti Island fringing reefs; offshore there are deeper reef systems and pinnacles in Cook Strait. Sandy channels and drop-offs near the harbour entrance concentrate tarakihi, gurnard and rig, while rocky headlands and structure hold kingfish, trevally and red moki. In rivers and lakes look for trout lies behind structure, deeper pools in low water and clean riffles after rain.
Common techniques reflect habitat and species: light to medium spinning gear with soft plastics or metal jigs works well for trevally and kahawai along the Kapiti coast; surface poppers and softbaits in the first light are deadly on schooling kahawai and smaller kingfish. For snapper, anchor or drift over reef with berley, and fish whole pilchard, strip baits or soft-bait rigs on a running sinker or paternoster. Deep reef species such as hapuku and tarakihi respond to slow vertical jigs or baited bottom rigs in 30โ80 m. Squid jigs around structure after dusk and light tackle squid jigs during an incoming tide are productive around harbour heads and rocky points. For trout, match insect life with small spinners, wet flies or nymph rigs in the Hutt and feeder streams; early morning and evening are best on calm days.
Tactical tips to lift your catch rate: read the tide โ many species key to tidal movement and concentrate on the first and last light around tide changes; use a sounder to locate drop-offs and bait marks, especially for deeper snapper and hapuku; adjust leader and hook size to the target โ heavier leader and big hooks for kingfish, lighter leaders and smaller hooks for trevally and trout; berley selectively to hold fish without over-chumming. Shore anglers should work headlands and channel edges on the incoming tide; boat anglers benefit from drifting across contours rather than anchoring over a single feature. Finally, tune lure speeds to water temperature: slower retrieves in cooler months, faster aggressive strikes in warm summer waters โ that simple change often triggers strikes in Wellington's variable currents.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 17 beaches and bays in this area.
