Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Napa
Fishing in Napa, CA revolves around the Napa River and nearby lakes, giving anglers a versatile mix of bass, catfish, trout, and panfish in a compact radius. The key is understanding how the river transitions from tidal brackish water down low to a slower, warmer freshwater system upstream, and how seasonal shifts push fish into predictable holding areas.
Napa River bass and stripers are the main draw. In spring, rising temperatures and longer days trigger strong pre-spawn largemouth and smallmouth activity in backwaters, marinas, and flooded tule edges. Work reaction baits—squarebill crankbaits, 3–4 inch swimbaits, spinnerbaits, and chatterbaits—around current breaks, riprap, and wood. As the river warms late spring into summer, fish slide deeper to channel edges, submerged rock, and shaded pilings. Switch to slower presentations: Texas-rigged creature baits, wacky-rigged stick worms, and drop-shot rigs with small finesse plastics.
Striped bass show best in cooler months, especially fall through early spring when fish push up from San Pablo and Suisun Bay. Focus on outside bends, deeper holes, and any obvious current seams. Boat anglers do well trolling deep-diving plugs or 4–6 inch soft-plastic swimbaits along channel edges, while shore anglers score with cut bait (anchovy, sardine), pile worms, or 4–5 inch paddle-tail swimbaits on 1/2–1 oz jig heads. Tide matters in the lower river; many anglers favor the last of the incoming and the first of the outgoing tide for consistent action.
Catfish and panfish fill in during the warm season. Channel and white catfish feed actively on warm evenings in slow, deeper bends, marinas, and slack pockets. Use simple bottom rigs with chicken liver, cut bait, or prepared dough baits. For bluegill and crappie, look to marinas, pilings, and protected pockets with cover. Small jigs under a float, tiny plastics, or pieces of nightcrawler catch plenty of panfish and are ideal when you need steady action.
Nearby lakes and reservoirs around Napa broaden your options. Foothill reservoirs and park lakes typically offer stocked rainbow trout in the cooler months, shifting to strong largemouth, spotted bass, and catfish bites as water temperatures climb. In winter and early spring, target trout by trolling small spoons and minnow plugs or casting from shore with PowerBait or inflated nightcrawlers near drop-offs and points. As the surface warms, move shallower in low light with jerkbaits, ripbaits, and small spoons.
Summer and fall bass tactics on these lakes hinge on structure. Work rocky points, submerged humps, and creek channels with jigs, Carolina rigs, and deep-diving crankbaits during the day; slide shallow early and late with topwater walking baits, poppers, and buzzbaits. Wind-blown banks, areas with baitfish activity, and any remaining green weeds are prime. Light spinning tackle with 6–10 lb test fluoro or braid-to-fluoro leaders helps when the bite gets pressured and finesse-oriented.
Year-round, success around Napa comes from adjusting to water clarity and current. After winter and spring rains, the river often runs off-color—go with louder, darker baits, heavier line, and fish tight to obvious cover. In clear summer and fall conditions, downsize lures, lengthen leaders, and focus on subtle presentations on edges and transitions. Whether you’re slipping a kayak into a quiet Napa River backwater or working a main-lake point at dawn, understanding seasonal movements and local structure is the fastest way to consistent catches.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 2 beaches and bays in this area.
