Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Clearwater
Clearwater, Florida fishing is built around a rich mix of grass flats, sandy beaches, bridge pilings, passes, and Gulf wrecks, giving anglers options in almost any weather or season. Inshore, spotted seatrout, redfish, and snook anchor the fishery, while nearshore and offshore structure holds grouper, snapper, king mackerel, and cobia. Clearwater Beach, Clearwater Pass, and the Intracoastal Waterway all offer productive, easy-access water for boat and shore anglers.
Seasonally, spring kicks off the most consistent bite. Rising water temps push trout and redfish onto the shallow grass flats inside Clearwater Harbor; look for 2–5 feet of water with mixed turtle grass and potholes. At the same time, Spanish mackerel, kingfish, and cobia push along the beaches and nearshore reefs. Slow-troll live pilchards or threadfin herring over hard bottom and artificial reefs, or cast spoons and small jigs when you see bait sprayed on the surface.
Summer brings classic west-coast Florida action. At first light, snook stack along Clearwater Beach troughs, around rock jetties, and in the shadow lines of the bridges. Freeline live scaled sardines or shrimp on 20–30 lb fluorocarbon leaders; downsize to get more bites in ultra-clear water. Tarpon migrate just off the sandbars—look for rolling strings of fish running north–south and present large live baits or 4–6 inch soft-plastic swimbaits slightly ahead of the school. By mid-morning, shift to deeper passes, docks, and mangrove points to avoid the heat.
Fall is arguably the best all-around time to fish Clearwater. Bait floods the bays and beaches, and nearly everything feeds aggressively. Target schooling redfish on the flats by watching for wakes and nervous mullet; gold spoons, topwater plugs, and soft jerkbaits excel when worked over broken grass. Offshore, cooling water brings king mackerel and grouper closer in. Vertical jig metal jigs over ledges or fish live pinfish on the bottom around rock piles in 40–80 feet for gag and red grouper.
In winter, focus on deeper potholes, channels, and residential canals that hold slightly warmer water. Trout and sheepshead concentrate around bridge pilings, docks, and rock piles; a simple shrimp-and-jighead combo or small live shrimp on a light knocker rig is hard to beat. Light tackle in the 8–12 lb class with fluorocarbon leaders helps when the water gets crystal clear. Work your baits slowly—many strikes come right on the bottom or when the bait pauses.
Clearwater offers strong shore and pier fishing options for anglers without boats. Clearwater Beach surf can produce pompano, whiting, and Spanish mackerel; cast small jigs tipped with shrimp into the first and second troughs. From pier and bridge railings, present baits vertically: live shrimp for sheepshead and mangrove snapper, cut bait for mackerel and sharks. Keep a sabiki rig ready to load up on threadfin and scaled sardines whenever bait shows, then immediately deploy one as a live offering for larger predators.
Across all seasons, success in Clearwater comes from reading tide and water clarity. Moving water is critical—focus on current edges in passes, around points, and along channel turns. Scale tackle to conditions: lighter line and smaller hooks for finicky inshore species in clear water, heavier gear and abrasion-resistant leaders when working structure for grouper, snook, or tarpon. Rotate between hard bottom, grass flats, and man-made structure until you find bait and active fish, then refine lure size, depth, and retrieve speed to match what they’re feeding on.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
