Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Crestview
Crestview, Florida, anchors a rich mix of freshwater and near‑coastal saltwater fishing thanks to its position along I‑10 and close proximity to Choctawhatchee River, Yellow River and Choctawhatchee Bay. Within a short drive, anglers can move from bass fishing dark tannic creeks to probing grass flats and bayous for trout and redfish. The key to success around Crestview is matching tactics to the season and specific water you’re fishing.
Spring is prime time for largemouth bass and crappie in the rivers, oxbows and small lakes scattered around the area. Look for bass staging on points, creek mouths and along emerging shoreline grass. Soft plastic worms, lizards and creature baits Texas‑rigged, along with suspending jerkbaits and spinnerbaits, cover most situations. For crappie, target brush, laydowns and outside bends with live minnows or 1/16–1/32 oz jigs under a fixed or slip float. As water warms into the mid‑60s, bass push shallow to beds; quiet boat positioning and long casts with weightless stickbaits become critical.
Through the summer heat, freshwater action shifts to low‑light periods. On the Yellow and Shoal River systems, work topwaters like frogs and buzzbaits around pads and wood at dawn, then switch to finesse worms, shaky heads or small jigs in deeper current breaks when the sun climbs. Night fishing around bridges and lit areas can be excellent for striped and hybrid striped bass where present, with small swimbaits, crankbaits and live shad producing well. Catfish action picks up on cut bait and chicken liver fished on simple slip‑sinker rigs in deeper holes and outside bends.
Crestview anglers also tap into nearby Choctawhatchee Bay and adjacent Gulf waters, roughly 30–40 minutes south. In spring and fall, speckled trout and redfish feed aggressively on bay flats and along creek mouths. Drift grass flats in 2–5 feet of water throwing popping cork rigs with shrimp imitations or soft plastics on 1/8–1/4 oz jigheads. On higher tides, slide up to the marsh edges and flooded grass; on lower tides, target potholes and channels. Redfish hug structure like oyster bars, dock pilings and rock, where gold spoons, weedless soft plastics and live shrimp or finger mullet excel.
During summer in the bay, focus on early morning topwater for trout along slicked‑off flats, then move deeper with grub jigs or Carolina‑rigged live bait once the sun gets high. Spanish mackerel and occasional king mackerel roam nearshore; target them by trolling spoons or casting metal jigs around bait schools and channel edges, especially near passes. Flounder hold along sandy drop‑offs, dock edges and channel mouths—slowly dragging a jig‑and‑paddle‑tail or live bull minnow along bottom is a reliable approach.
Fall brings some of Crestview’s best multi‑species action. In freshwater, bass feed heavily around shad schools; medium‑running crankbaits, spinnerbaits and chatterbaits worked along wind‑blown banks and creek arms can be outstanding. In the bay, schooling trout and redfish push bait into tighter areas—look for birds working and nervous bait on the surface. As water cools into winter, downsize lures, slow your presentation and concentrate on deeper holes, channels and sunny banks that warm quickly.
Tactically, anglers around Crestview benefit from being mobile and versatile. Small jon boats, kayaks and canoes open up shallow creeks and backwaters that see little pressure. Light to medium spinning tackle with 10–20 lb braid and fluorocarbon leaders covers both freshwater and inshore saltwater, with a compact selection of soft plastics, jigs, crankbaits and a few topwaters doing most of the work. Pay close attention to water clarity, current and tide (when fishing the bay), and adjust lure size, color and speed accordingly to stay on fish throughout the year.
