Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 13:48 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Fort Myers

Fort Myers fishing centers around the Caloosahatchee River, Pine Island Sound, Sanibel and Captiva, and the expansive backcountry of Matlacha Pass. Inshore, the big threeβ€”snook, redfish, and spotted seatroutβ€”drive much of the action, while nearshore structure and wrecks hold grouper, snapper, mackerel, and seasonal pelagics. Access is excellent via public ramps along McGregor Boulevard, Punta Rassa, and around Cape Coral, giving small-boat and kayak anglers plenty of options.

Seasonal patterns in Fort Myers are key. Late spring through early fall brings strong snook and tarpon fishing along the beaches of Sanibel, Captiva, and Lovers Key, as well as in the passes and river mouth. Hot summer water pushes fish tight to current and shadeβ€”focus on dock lines, bridge pilings, and deeper troughs. Fall brings schools of baitfish and aggressive feeds on the bars and along the outer islands, with Spanish mackerel, jacks, and bull reds mixed in. Winter cool-down pushes seatrout onto deeper grassflats and channels in Pine Island Sound and concentrates sheepshead, black drum, and mangrove snapper around rock piles, oyster bars, and bridges.

Fort Myers offers diverse habitat types. Shallow turtle grass and sand potholes in Pine Island Sound and along Sanibel’s inside shore are prime for sight-fishing reds and trout on high, clear tides. Mangrove shorelines and feeder creeks in Matlacha Pass and the Caloosahatchee backwaters hold snook year-round, especially where current wraps around points or spills from residential canals. Nearshore, artificial reefs and natural ledges just a few miles off the beach hold gag grouper, lane and mangrove snapper, cobia, and schools of king and Spanish mackerel when bait is thick.

Common techniques revolve around natural bait and light tackle. For inshore, 2500–3000 size spinning outfits with 10–20 lb braid and 20–30 lb fluorocarbon leaders cover most situations. Free-line live shrimp, pilchards, or pinfish around mangroves, docks, and current edges for snook and redfish; add a split shot or light jighead when the tide rips. On the grassflats, 1/8–1/4 oz jigheads tipped with shrimp or soft plastics in natural shades excel for trout. Popping corks with a 2–3 ft leader and a shrimp or paddle-tail are deadly over mixed grass and sand.

Tactical tips make a big difference in this area’s pressured water. Fish low-light windowsβ€”dawn, dusk, and tide changesβ€”around Sanibel and Captiva passes for the best shot at quality snook and tarpon. In the Caloosahatchee, work up-current sides of bridge pilings and channel markers, letting baits sweep naturally with the tide. When targeting reds on the flats, pole or drift quietly and cast ahead of cruising fish, keeping boat noise low. For nearshore trips, watch for bird activity and surface bait; trolling small spoons or dusters behind planers is effective for Spanish and king mackerel, while dropping live baits or jigs to the bottom around wrecks and reefs produces grouper and snapper. Adjust leader strength to water clarityβ€”lighter for clear grassflats, heavier around structureβ€”to maximize bites while still landing fish in Fort Myers’ demanding, structure-rich environment.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 1 beaches and bays in this area.
