Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:8 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Jacksonville

Jacksonville fishing revolves around the St. Johns River, the Intracoastal Waterway, Mayport jetties, and miles of Atlantic beachfront. These overlapping saltwater and brackish zones hold bait year-round, which keeps redfish, trout, flounder, and numerous offshore species in range for anglers fishing from boats, kayaks, and piers.

Seasonally, winter pushes fish into deeper holes in the St. Johns and ICW. Target redfish, black drum, and sheepshead around bridge pilings, dock clusters, and rock edges on slow-moving tides. Vertical fish with fiddler crabs or shrimp on a simple Carolina rig, keeping leads just heavy enough to hold bottom in the current. Spotted seatrout stack in deeper bends and around channel edges; work soft plastics on 1/4–3/8 oz jig heads with a slow hop-and-pause retrieve close to bottom.

Spring brings bait runs along the beaches and into the ICW. Look for Spanish mackerel, bluefish, and jacks blitzing glass minnows and pogies outside the Mayport jetties and along the surf line. Cast small metals or spoons to breaking fish and retrieve fast. Inshore, redfish and trout spread onto flats and creek mouths; a popping cork with shrimp or a 3–4 inch paddle tail is reliable when fished along oyster bars on the first of the incoming or last of the falling tide.

Summer opens up the full offshore game. From the Mayport and St. Johns River inlets, boats run to nearshore wrecks and reefs for snapper, grouper, cobia, and king mackerel. Slow-troll live pogies or mullet around wrecks and along the beach for kings, keeping baits staggered at different distances behind the boat. For bottom fishing, drop cut bait or live pinfish on a two-hook bottom rig just off the structure; use enough weight to stay vertical in the current to reduce snags. Look for cobia around buoys, rays, and bait pods—keep a jig or live bait rod ready.

Fall is prime inshore time in Jacksonville. Cooling water and strong mullet runs fire up bull redfish at the Mayport jetties and along the St. Johns River channel. Fish big cut mullet or crab on the bottom with a fish-finder rig and strong leader, focusing on current seams and deep breaks along the rocks. On the flats and in creeks, slot reds and trout shadow schools of mullet; topwater plugs at daybreak over oyster bars and grass edges are highly effective. As mullet leave the beaches, surf anglers do well on pompano, whiting, and bluefish using sand fleas, shrimp, or Fishbites on double-drop rigs cast just beyond the outer bar.

Across all seasons, Jacksonville anglers succeed by reading tide and structure. Oyster bars, creek mouths, jetty rocks, and channel edges concentrate current and bait. Plan trips around moving water, adjust leader size to water clarity, and match bait size to what you see flipping on the surface or on your electronics. Use heavier tackle near rock and bridge structure to keep fish from breaking you off, and lighter line on open flats and beaches where long casts and subtle presentations get more bites.

The Best Fishing Spots around Jacksonville

Jacksonville Beach

A marquee surf-fishing stretch, Jacksonville Beach produces pompano, whiting, redfish, bluefish, and Spanish mackerel with peak action during spring and fall bait runs; try sandbars and troughs at dawn or dusk, and when the surf is calm you’ll spot schools pushing within casting range—if you prefer structure-oriented action, the nearby Jacksonville Beach Fishing Pier concentrates bait and predators.

Huguenot Memorial Park

A drive-on shoreline at the mouth of the St. Johns, Huguenot’s sandbars and jetty edges yield redfish, black drum, bluefish, whiting, and sharks; seasonal pushes of Spanish mackerel and tarpon light up the outer bars, and moving tides sweep forage along the points—on calmer days, the inside flats can produce surprise trout and flounder similar to nearby Little Talbot Island.

Little Talbot Island State Park

Pristine surf and inlet edges make Little Talbot a favorite for pompano, redfish, speckled trout (seatrout), bluefish, and flounder; work the troughs and point currents on moving water, and look for bait dimples in the sloughs—on summer mornings, glassy conditions bring trout tight to the beach much like along Atlantic Beach and Ponte Vedra Beach.

Nassau Sound

A tide-swept sound bordered by bars and channels, Nassau Sound is prime for bull reds, drum, trout, flounder, and tarpon; boats drift edges and anchor on channel turns while shore anglers score from access points on the sound’s bridges and beaches, with action comparable to the nearby George Crady Bridge Fishing Pier State Park.

Mill Cove

Just inside the St. Johns near the Dames Point area, Mill Cove’s flats and channels load with bull redfish, trout, drum, and seasonal bluefish; strong tides stack fish on ledges and potholes, and oyster edges produce on moving water—fall often brings big reds similar to those roaming Dames Point and the St. Johns River Entrance.

Dames Point

Around the prominent bend and bridge on the St. Johns, Dames Point features deep current seams and structure holding bull redfish, black drum, sheepshead, and trout; boaters work eddies and drop-offs while nearby shoreline access offers casting to migrating schools during tide changes, a bite pattern echoing action in Mill Cove.

Sisters Creek

A tidal tributary near Mayport that links marsh and river, Sisters Creek provides year-round shots at redfish, trout, flounder, and sheepshead; oyster bars and feeder cuts shine on moving tides, and proximity to the inlet makes it a reliable staging area comparable to marsh channels off the Intracoastal Waterway.
