Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Naples
Naples, Florida fishing centers on a mix of Gulf beaches, passes, canals, and mangrove backwaters that hold fish 12 months a year. The Naples Pier, Gordon Pass, Doctors Pass, and the maze of backwaters around Rookery Bay and the Ten Thousand Islands give anglers multiple options when wind or conditions change. Gamefish here relate strongly to tides, water temperature, and baitfish movements, so timing and location matter more than fancy gear.
Seasonally, spring and fall are prime for inshore and nearshore fishing around Naples. As water temps push into the low 70s, snook, redfish, and trout feed aggressively on flats and along mangrove shorelines. Work shorelines with current using 1/4 oz jigheads and soft plastics in natural colors, or free-line live pilchards and shrimp tight to structure. Dawn and dusk high tides are the key windows; when tide stalls, slide to deeper channels and docks.
Summer brings big tarpon and beach snook. Tarpon migrate along the beaches and off the passes, especially around first light. Target them with live crabs or threadfin herring under a float, or 4–6 inch swimbaits on heavy spinning gear. For snook, walk the beaches from Vanderbilt down past Naples Pier and sight-fish them in the trough with small white jigs, 3-inch soft plastics, or free-lined live bait. Fish as early as possible to beat both heat and boat traffic, and use long fluorocarbon leaders in clear water.
Winter fishing around Naples shifts into the canals, deeper backwater holes, and nearshore structure as water cools. Sheepshead, snapper, and drum stack on bridges, docks, and rock piles. Downsize to 1/0 hooks, light fluorocarbon (15–20 lb), and small live shrimp or fiddler crabs. Work slowly around pilings and let your bait sit next to structure; most bites are subtle taps. Inside the mangroves, focus on deeper bends and holes on sunny afternoons when water warms a few degrees.
Habitat and structure drive everything in Naples. Inshore, target:
- Mangrove shorelines with good tidal flow for snook and redfish.
- Grass flats in 2–5 feet near Gordon Pass and northward for trout, pompano, and ladyfish.
- Docks and bridges in canals and along the Gordon River for snapper, sheepshead, and night snook.
- Passes and jetties (Gordon Pass, Doctors Pass) for mixed action with mackerel, jacks, and seasonal tarpon.
Nearshore and offshore, hard bottom, ledges, and wrecks off Naples hold grouper, snapper, permit, cobia, and kingfish. For grouper and snapper, anchor precisely on structure and drop live pinfish, sardines, or cut bait on knocker rigs with just enough weight to hold bottom. For permit and cobia on wrecks, free-line live crabs or pilchards and keep a pitch rod ready when fish come up in the chum line.
Practical tips: Fish moving water; slack tide usually means slow fishing. Scale your leader to the water clarity—lighter and longer on the beaches and flats, heavier around docks and wrecks. Match bait size to the prevalent forage: small shrimp and glass minnows in winter, larger pilchards and threadfin in warmer months. Keep a versatile inshore outfit (7’ medium spinning, 10–20 lb braid, 20–30 lb leader) and a heavier setup for tarpon or grouper so you can adapt quickly to what Naples conditions give you on any given day.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 16 beaches and bays in this area.
