Fishing Overview West Palm Beach

West Palm Beach sits on one of Florida’s most fish-rich stretches of coast, where deep bluewater rides tight to shore and the Lake Worth Lagoon provides dependable inshore action. The Gulf Stream often flows within a few miles of the beach, so anglers can run short and fish big-game pelagics in the morning, then slide back inside for snook, jacks and snapper before sunset.

Seasonally, winter through early spring is prime time offshore for sailfish, king mackerel, blackfin tuna and wahoo along the 90–300 foot contours off Palm Beach Inlet. Kite fishing live goggle-eyes or threadfin herring is the signature tactic for sails here; keep two kites out and stagger baits at different depths, and be ready to bump the boat forward to keep lines tight in the current. In spring and early summer, mahi-mahi and blackfin tuna stack along weedlines and current edges; run and gun, watching for birds, floating debris and sharp color changes.

Bottom fishing is excellent around the numerous ledges and wrecks just east of the inlet. For mutton snapper and grouper, drift or anchor up-current of structure in 80–200 feet, dropping 30–60 lb leaders with live pinfish, sardines or ballyhoo just off the bottom. Use enough lead to maintain a vertical line in the Gulf Stream’s push. When current is ripping, switch to a streamlined sinker and smaller baits to reduce drag. Deep wrecks hold amberjack, cobia and big almaco jacks; heavy jigging rods and 8–12 oz vertical jigs are standard, with color less important than getting down quickly.

Inshore, the Lake Worth Lagoon, Intracoastal Waterway and nearby canals are year-round producers for snook, tarpon, jacks and mangrove snapper. Summer is peak snook season around the Palm Beach and Lake Worth inlets, bridges and dock lines. Target shadow lines on moving tides using live pilchards, croakers or mullet on 30–40 lb fluorocarbon leaders; step up to 50 lb if big fish are around the pilings. At night, free-line baits or slow-roll paddletail swimbaits and flare hawk jigs along the bottom where current sweeps past structure.

Tarpon cruise the beaches and inlet mouths from late spring into fall. Look for rolling fish at first light inside the inlet or along the pier and cast live crabs or mullet up-current so they drift naturally into the school. When targeting laid-up fish in the Intracoastal, keep the boat quiet, make long casts and downsize leaders if they get finicky.

For shore-bound anglers, the West Palm Beach pier, jetties and nearby beaches offer solid action. In winter, surf anglers intercept pompano, bluefish and Spanish mackerel using sand fleas, shrimp and metal spoons. Long rods, 3–5 oz pyramid sinkers and double-drop rigs will keep baits parked in the troughs where pompano travel. When the water is clear and calm, scale down leaders and hooks for more bites.

Boat positioning and tide timing are critical across this fishery. Offshore, watch your drift line relative to wrecks and ledges on your chartplotter and don’t hesitate to reset if you slide off the sweet spot. Inshore, focus efforts around stronger moving water at the beginnings and ends of tides, when predators pin bait against seawalls, docks and bridge pilings. Matching local bait—pilchards, mullet, sardines—and staying mobile are the keys to consistent success in West Palm Beach.

If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time.
