Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 11:15 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

Next New Moon in ~15 days on 9th November
Full Moon is generally a productive time for fishing - especially night fishing. Bright nights mean that many predators feed more actively during the night. During full moon the gravitational pull is in line with the gravitational pull of the sun, affecting all wildlife and increasing feeding behaviour.
  • Distance to earth:
    380,138 km
    Proximity:
    60 %
We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. The graph below shows you the 3 hourly weather progression over the next 7 days. Scroll the graph left or right to see more.

Fishing Overview Houma

Houma, Louisiana is a launch pad into one of the richest estuary systems on the Gulf Coast. From the Intracoastal Waterway and Bayou Terrebonne out to Cocodrie, Dularge, and Lake Boudreaux, anglers find a maze of marsh ponds, canals, and bays that hold fish 12 months a year. The mix of freshwater flow and Gulf salinity creates prime habitat for redfish, speckled trout, flounder, and drum along with nearshore pelagics closer to the Gulf.

Seasonal patterns drive where you should focus. In spring, speckled trout push into interior bays, shell reefs, and current-swept points; look to Lake Boudreaux, Sister Lake, and Bayou Grand Caillou edges. Redfish roam shallow ponds and shorelines as water warms—sight-fishing is excellent on clear, low-wind days. Summer pushes trout toward deeper bay mouths, rigs, and platforms south of Cocodrie; early morning topwater bites over oyster reefs are consistent. Fall is prime time around Houma: cooling temps concentrate bait in marsh drains and cuts, with heavy numbers of slot-size reds, school trout, and flounder stacking on moving tides. In winter, trout drop into deeper ship channels, pipeline canals, and holes, while redfish hold in protected ponds, dead-ends, and along mud banks that warm quickly in the sun.

The key habitat types around Houma include shallow grass ponds, broken marsh, oyster reefs, pipeline canals, and nearshore rigs. Redfish love wind-blown points, pockets with submerged grass, and small drains spilling bait from interior ponds. Speckled trout prefer oyster bottom, current seams, and drop-offs from 3–12 feet. Flounder lie tight to edges—marsh points, cuts, and the downcurrent side of shoreline irregularities. In clearer weather, sight-fishing reds along shorelines and points is a major draw, especially in the ponds off Dularge and down toward Lake Decade.

Effective techniques are straightforward but timing matters. For speckled trout, use popping corks rigged above a 1/4 oz jighead with shrimp or plastics (matrix-style shads, paddle tails) around reefs and points on moving tides. When trout are deeper, switch to tight-lined soft plastics or light jigging spoons. Redfish respond well to gold spoons, spinnerbaits, and 3–4 inch paddle tails worked along grass edges and drains; in stained water, darker colors and vibration help fish locate the bait. For live bait, shrimp, croakers, and finger mullet produce across the board, especially in summer and early fall.

A few tactical tips make a big difference in the Houma marsh. Plan your day around the tidal range—outgoing tides pull bait from interior ponds and concentrate predators at choke points like narrow cuts and small bayou mouths. Use the wind to your advantage: fish windblown banks where bait is pushed against shorelines. When exploring new ponds, keep your drifts quiet and short until you find life—bait flicking, birds working, and slicks are all positive signs. In cooler months, slow your retrieve and focus on deeper bends of bayous and canals. Whether you launch from Houma heading toward Dularge, Cocodrie, or Lake Boudreaux, targeting the right structure on the right tide is the formula for consistent fishing success in this South Louisiana hotspot.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 24 beaches and bays in this area.

Harbours and Marinas can often times be productive fishing spots for land based fishing as their sheltered environment attracts a wide variety of bait fish. Similar to river mouths, harbour entrances are also great places to fish as lots of fish will move in and out with the rising and falling tides. There are 1 main harbours in this area.
