Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:4 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. The graph below shows you the 3 hourly weather progression over the next 7 days. Scroll the graph left or right to see more.

Fishing Overview Lake Charles

Lake Charles sits in the heart of southwest Louisiana’s bayou country and fishes more like an inshore coastal system than a typical inland lake. Anglers can work brackish water near the I-210 and I-10 bridges, push south into the Calcasieu Ship Channel and marshes toward Big Lake, or slide north and east into more freshwater-feeling bayous and backwaters for bass, crappie, and catfish.

Seasonally, late winter and early spring see speckled trout and redfish staging along deeper drops, ship channel edges, and industrial bulkheads. Slow-rolled soft plastics on 1/4–3/8 oz jig heads, bounced close to bottom, reliably take fish. As water warms in spring, trout move onto windblown points, shell flats, and reefy bends in the Calcasieu system; redfish push into shallow marsh ponds and grass-lined bayous. Bass anglers do well around riprap, dock pilings, and woody cover with spinnerbaits, Texas-rigged worms, and shallow crankbaits.

Summer is prime topwater and moving-bait time. Speckled trout feed early and late on oyster reefs and current-swept points; walk-the-dog plugs and popping corks rigged with shrimp-imitating soft plastics are local staples. Redfish cruise shoreline grass, cuts, and drains—gold spoons, weedless swimbaits, and shrimp under corks produce steady action. When heat builds, many anglers switch to the Calcasieu Ship Channel and bridge areas, targeting current seams and shadow lines with live bait or soft plastics fished mid-column. Freshwater action picks up at dawn and dusk, with bass and panfish tight to cover in canals and backwater sloughs.

During fall, cooling temperatures trigger some of the best inshore fishing of the year. Shrimp and baitfish funnel out of the marsh, concentrating trout, reds, flounder, and drum around bayou mouths, drains, and channel intersections. Drift-fishing shell and mixed-bottom flats while fan-casting soft plastics or suspending twitchbaits is highly effective. Flounder stack along ledges and sandy pockets; slowly dragging Gulp! or curly-tail jigs along the bottom is a high-percentage approach. Bass often feed aggressively on shad and small mullet in connecting bayous—lipless crankbaits and square-bills cover water fast.

Winter pushes most gamefish to deeper, more stable water in Lake Charles and the connected channels. Focus on deeper bends, holes near bridges, and industrial slips when cold fronts drop water temperatures. Slow presentations are key: subtle plastic jerkbaits, Ned-style jigs, and live bait fished near bottom outproduce power techniques. Catfish and drum remain reliable targets by anchoring on channel edges and soaking cut bait or shrimp in current seams.

Across all seasons, pay close attention to wind, tide, and water clarity. Protected shorelines on the lee side of wind often hold cleaner water and more consistent bites. In slightly stained water, darker soft plastic colors and lures with vibration stand out better. Polarized sunglasses help you read shoreline grass edges, shell patches, and subtle current lines that routinely give away feeding reds and trout. With its mix of brackish and freshwater habitats, Lake Charles rewards anglers who stay mobile, fish the conditions, and adapt tactics to each zone of the system.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 22 beaches and bays in this area.

Harbours and Marinas can often times be productive fishing spots for land based fishing as their sheltered environment attracts a wide variety of bait fish. Similar to river mouths, harbour entrances are also great places to fish as lots of fish will move in and out with the rising and falling tides. There are 1 main harbours in this area.
