Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:6 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. The graph below shows you the 3 hourly weather progression over the next 7 days. Scroll the graph left or right to see more.

Fishing Overview Thibodaux

Fishing in Thibodaux, Louisiana is shaped by Bayou Lafourche and its maze of connecting canals, marsh drains, and backwater ponds. Anglers here tap into both freshwater and brackish systems, making it possible to catch bass and sac-a-lait one day, then redfish and speckled trout the next, often within a short drive of town. Launches and canal rights-of-way give solid access for small boats, kayaks, and bank fishing.

Seasonal patterns are driven by water temperature and salinity. In late winter and early spring, warming bayous and dead-end canals around Thibodaux see improved largemouth bass and sac-a-lait action; look for fish staging on outside bends, pilings, and laydowns. As water warms into late spring, bass push into shallow grass and lily edges, while sac-a-lait hold on brush piles, docks, and submerged timber. During the heat of summer, fishing is best at first light and just before dark, focusing on shaded cover, deeper bends, and any current created by pumps or culverts. Fall brings some of the most reliable action: cooling water triggers aggressive feeding from bass, bream, and catfish in the bayou, while brackish areas closer to the lower Bayou Lafourche corridor see improved redfish, speckled trout, and flounder movement.

Habitat types around Thibodaux range from narrow, steep-sided bayous to wide canals with riprap, grass lines, and industrial structure. In freshwater stretches, target outside bends with deeper holes, submerged trees, and any visible current seam. Grassbeds, hyacinth mats, and cypress roots attract bass and bream. Brackish zones closer to the coastal marshes hold oyster-lined shorelines, broken marsh, and trenasses (small drainage cuts) that funnel bait and gamefish.

Effective techniques are straightforward but reward precision. For largemouth bass, soft plastics rigged Texas-style, compact jigs, and shallow-running crankbaits worked along grass edges and wood cover produce consistent bites. Topwaters early and late in the day over submerged grass can draw explosive strikes, especially during spring and fall. Sac-a-lait anglers do best by vertically jigging small tube jigs or hair jigs around pilings, tops, and canal ledges, or suspending them under small corks next to visible structure. For bluegill and other bream, tiny pieces of worm or crickets under a pencil float near grass lines and cypress knees are reliable.

Catfish are common in the deeper bends and holes of Bayou Lafourche and connecting canals. Simple bottom rigs with cut shad, shrimp, or nightcrawlers produce channel and blue catfish, especially near drop-offs, bridge pilings, and along outside bends where current undercuts the bank. Let the bait sit and refresh it regularly; moving a few yards at a time until you find a concentration of fish is more productive than waiting in one unproven spot.

Anglers targeting inshore species like redfish and speckled trout often trailer south from Thibodaux toward more saline marshes linked to Bayou Lafourche. In those areas, gold spoons, soft plastic paddle tails on 1/8–1/4 oz jigheads, and popping cork rigs with shrimp imitations are standard redfish producers along marsh shorelines and drains. Speckled trout stack along shell bottoms, current breaks, and deeper bayous, hitting soft plastics, jerkbaits, and suspending plugs. Windward banks that push bait into corners, points, or drains typically outfish calm, lifeless water.

Practical tips for the Thibodaux region include watching water clarity and minor current; even a slight push of water from pumps, tides, or passing barge wakes can concentrate feeding fish. Polarized glasses help read grasslines, wood cover, and subtle depth changes. Downsizing line and lures when the water is clear, and upsizing when it’s stained, will noticeably improve catch rates. Locals also pay close attention to water levelsβ€”falling water tends to pull fish out of flooded cover and into more predictable edges, canals, and drains, making them easier to pattern.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 29 beaches and bays in this area.
