October Fishing Report

October brings cooler mornings to Westwego’s marshes and canals, and the bite has picked up with each passing front. Look for speckled trout schooling on points and bayou mouths at first light, especially on moving tides. Redfish are cruising shallow grass edges and duck ponds; sight-casting is possible when the north winds after a front clear the water. Flounder are staging at drains and weirs, ambushing bait as water dumps on a falling tide. Around structure on the Intracoastal, expect black drum and sheepshead.

Best bite windows are early morning and late afternoon, with the steadiest action two hours around the tide change. Work live shrimp under a popping cork for trout; switch to 3-inch paddle tails (shrimp or glow/chartreuse) on 1/8–1/4 oz jigheads when the wind is up. For reds, throw gold spoons or weedless paddletails along grass lines; tip jigs with shrimp for drum near pilings. Topwater plugs can shine at dawn on slick conditions.

Top tip: After a cold front, target leeward marsh drains where cleaner, falling water concentrates bait—fish the first drop-off outside the drain before moving deeper.
