Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 15:19 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

Next Full Moon in ~13 days on 29th June
New Moon is generally a very productive time for fishing. Dark nights mean that many predators feed more actively during daylight hours. The combined gravity of sun and moon during New Moon days has a stronger effect on all water bodies, leads to increased food availabilty and hence better fishing.
  • Distance to earth:
    365,349 km
    Proximity:
    94.7 %
We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Boston

Boston fishing centers on Boston Harbor, its island chains, and easy access to offshore grounds like Stellwagen Bank and Jeffreys Ledge. The season generally runs from April through November, with distinct patterns for each species. Early spring brings holdover striped bass and winter flounder into the inner harbor, concentrating around warm-water discharges, muddy flats, and channel edges near places like the Mystic River, Neponset, and inner harbor piers.

As waters warm in May and June, migratory striped bass push into Boston Harbor in force. Look for bass along current seams around Deer Island, Long Island, Spectacle Island, and the bridges and riprap along the Harborwalk. Productive tactics include casting soft-plastic paddletails on jig heads, working topwater plugs at first and last light, and drifting live mackerel or pogies marked on the fish finder. Focus on moving water around tide changes; if you’re not seeing bait on the screen or surface, keep moving between rips and channel edges until you find life.

Bluefish typically arrive in late spring and hang around through early fall, often mixed with stripers in open harbor rips and along the outer islands. When terns and gulls are working, cast metal spoons or epoxy jigs and burn them back quickly to trigger hits. Use heavier fluorocarbon leaders or light wire to reduce bite-offs. For shore anglers, locations like Castle Island, Deer Island, and various public piers provide access to blitzing blues and schoolie stripers when tides and bait line up.

Bottom fishing in the Boston area can be excellent. Early-season winter flounder frequent shallow, muddy flats inside the harbor; drift or anchor and fish double-hook rigs baited with clam, worm, or mussel close to bottom. Through summer, black sea bass, scup, and tautog hold on rock piles, wrecks, and bridge pilings from the outer harbor to just offshore. Use hi-lo rigs with squid strips or crab baits, dropping directly on structure and slowly repositioning until you get bit.

For offshore anglers, Boston provides a direct run to Stellwagen Bank, a premier ground for cod, haddock, and pollock, along with bluefin tuna in season. Jigging metal slabs or bait rigs with clams and squid along the edges of the bank is standard for groundfish. For tuna, troll spreader bars, bars with squid chains, or cast stickbaits and poppers to surface-feeding fish that are pushing sand eels and mackerel. Always watch for whales, slicks, and bird life to pinpoint productive drifts.

Late summer into fall is prime time across Boston’s saltwater. False albacore and bonito can occasionally show along the outer harbor and nearby Cape Ann edges, with small metals and epoxy jigs matching tiny bait. Striped bass feed heavily on peanut bunker around harbor mouths and river outflows—downsizing to smaller baits and fishing aggressive tide windows keeps rods bent. As water cools in October and November, focus on deeper channels, ledges, and the outer harbor transitions where bass, cod, and mixed groundfish stage on their way out.

To fish Boston effectively, watch tides, water temperatures, and wind direction. Use marine charts to identify channels, ledges, and structure, then combine that with visible signs like bait, birds, and current lines. Whether casting from the Harborwalk or running a center console to Stellwagen, staying mobile and adjusting to conditions is the key to consistently productive Boston fishing.

The Best Fishing Spots around Boston

Boston Harbor

A vast, productive urban fishery with access to rips, channels, and the Boston Harbor Islands, Boston Harbor holds spring runs of striped bass and Atlantic mackerel, summer bluefish and fluke, and in-season winter flounder; shore anglers work piers and seawalls from Downtown to East Boston while boaters drift current seams, rock piles, and ledges connected to Massachusetts Bay.

Charles River

Along the Esplanade and basin, the Charles offers urban-access action for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, and seasonal carp, with early-morning and dusk topwater bites common; kayaks and small boats work coves and bridge pilings, while shore anglers cast from docks, paths, and the shade of the Hatch Shell area near Back Bay.

Revere Beach

America’s first public beach produces reliable surfcasting for migrating striped bass in spring and fall, with summer shots at bluefish and the occasional fluke; long sandy stretches and nearby structure like groins and creek mouths create rips and troughs within easy reach north of Logan Airport.

Castle Island

Connected by causeway in South Boston, Castle Island’s rocky edges and current around Fort Independence draw striped bass, spring mackerel, and summertime bluefish; anglers work lures and bait along the rip lines and the channel toward Boston Harbor, with sunset tides often producing best.

Mystic River

From Assembly Row to the lower locks, this urban river mixes freshwater and tidal influences, yielding spring and fall runs of striped bass plus resident perch and sunfish; shoreline paths, parks, and small-boat access let anglers target bridge pilings, marsh edges, and eddies feeding toward Boston Inner Harbor.

Deer Island

Jutting into the outer harbor off Winthrop, Deer Island’s walkable perimeter path gives access to sweeping currents that draw striped bass, bluefish, and spring mackerel; points and boulder fields facing Massachusetts Bay create ambush zones for plugs, metals, and live bait.

Pleasure Bay

The enclosed waters beside South Boston’s causeways provide family-friendly access and steady action for schoolie striped bass, mackerel pulses in spring, and summertime species chasing bait around the Sugar Bowl; anglers walk the seawalls and bridge openings that exchange water with Boston Harbor.

Fort Point Channel

Cutting through the Seaport into the Inner Harbor, this channel’s deep, shaded edges and marina structure attract striped bass and harbor pollock, with occasional spring mackerel pushing bait schools; anglers fish pilings, eddies, and outflows from the Congress and Summer Street bridges near the Seaport District.

Jamaica Pond

A deep kettle lake in the Emerald Necklace, Jamaica Pond offers accessible city fishing for rainbow trout and brown trout in cooler months plus resident largemouth bass and yellow perch; shore paths and small craft work drop-offs and the eastern bank across from Jamaica Plain.

Nut Island

At the outer edge of Quincy’s Houghs Neck, Nut Island’s fishing pier and rocky shoreline reach moving water that funnels striped bass, spring mackerel, and roaming bluefish; anglers cast jigs and metals into rips formed by tides sweeping toward Boston Harbor and Hingham Bay.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
