Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Jersey City
Jersey City fishing revolves around the Hudson River and Upper New York Bay, giving shore and boat anglers direct access to some of the Northeast’s most consistent inshore saltwater action. From Liberty State Park to the Morris Canal basin, anglers can target striped bass, bluefish, fluke, porgy, and tautog in heavily structured, current-swept water that fishes best on moving tides.
Seasonal patterns drive most fishing decisions here. Spring kicks off with the striped bass migration, as fish push up the Hudson in April and May chasing bunker and herring. This is prime time for larger bass, especially around channel edges, bridge structure, and pier pilings. Early summer brings schoolie stripers, snapper bluefish, and the first reliable fluke bite along sandy bottom and channel slopes. Mid-summer often means mixed-bag action: fluke, sea bass, porgies, and sea robins on the bottom; snappers and small blues higher in the water column. Fall is second peak season for stripers and bluefish as they stage on bait schools in the bay, often pushing bunker tight to the surface. Winter action shifts to cold-tolerant species like tautog around rockpiles and winter flounder on softer bottom.
Key habitat types around Jersey City include riprap shorelines, pier pilings, rocky edges, ship channels, and muddy or sandy flats. Liberty State Park’s walkways and bulkheads give access to current seams and eddies where bass and blues ambush bait. The Morris Canal and marina areas provide slightly calmer, deeper pockets that hold fluke, sea bass, and porgies. Any obvious rock or concrete rubble—especially near current breaks—can be a magnet for tautog and black sea bass. Channel edges where the depth drops quickly are classic spots for drifting bucktails for fluke or soaking bait for stripers.
Effective techniques depend on the target. For striped bass, focus on tide windows; an incoming or outgoing tide with noticeable current is far better than slack. Cast 1–2 oz bucktail jigs tipped with soft plastics, or work paddletail swimbaits along the bottom near structure. When bunker schools are visible, snag-and-drop methods and live-lining bunker from shore or boat can be extremely productive. Bluefish respond to fast-moving metals and topwater plugs; wire or heavier fluorocarbon leaders help handle their teeth.
Fluke fishing in Jersey City is primarily a drifting game. Use bucktail jigs with Gulp! style grubs or strips, or bottom rigs with spearing and squid over edges where 10–30 feet of water meets the channel. Short, sharp hops off the bottom trigger strikes. For porgy and sea bass, simple high-low rigs with small hooks, clam, or squid strips fished tight to structure produce steady action.
Tautog specialists target hard bottom and pilings with compact bottom rigs, strong hooks, and green crab baits lowered straight down. Keep your sinker just off the bottom and be ready to set on the first tap. Throughout the season, use heavier gear than you might expect; strong current, debris, and large fish around structure demand stout rods, 30–40 lb braid, and abrasion-resistant leaders to consistently land fish in Jersey City’s urban waters.
