Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Beaumont
Fishing around Beaumont, Texas centers on the Neches River corridor, the Sabine River system, and nearby Sabine Lake and coastal marshes. This mix of fresh, brackish, and saltwater means anglers can target bass and catfish one day, then switch to redfish and speckled trout the next without driving far. Key areas include the Neches River above and below town, the salt-influenced stretches closer to Port Arthur, and the network of bayous and canals feeding Sabine Lake.
Seasonal patterns are driven by river flow and Gulf temperatures. In late winter and early spring, freshwater action on the Neches and its backwaters ramps up: crappie stack up around brush, laydowns, and bridge pilings, while blue and channel catfish bite cut shad and prepared baits in deeper bends. White bass run up tributaries during high-flow periods, and bass fishing improves as water warms into the 60s. By late spring and summer, attention shifts toward the lower Neches and Sabine Lake, where speckled trout feed over shell and mud flats at first light and redfish push into marsh lakes and drains on higher tides.
Summer into early fall is prime for inshore species. Redfish cruise shorelines, grass edges, and marsh drains, especially where tidal current funnels bait. Speckled trout hold near drop-offs, shell pads, and current seams; dawn topwater plugs and walk‑the‑dog baits shine on slick mornings, followed by soft plastics on 1/8–1/4 oz jig heads once the sun gets up. Flounder relate to current breaks around cuts, bayou mouths, and ship channel edges, taking slowly worked soft plastics, Gulp! shrimp, or mud minnows dragged along bottom. Black drum and sheepshead frequent pilings, rocks, and dock structure, readily eating shrimp and fiddler crabs.
Fall is arguably the most consistent time to fish near Beaumont. Cooling water pushes bait out of the marsh, concentrating redfish and trout in main drains and the lake’s shorelines. North winds after early fronts often create strong outgoing tides—target narrow pinch points where bait has to move. This same period is excellent for big blue catfish in deeper holes of the Neches, with cut shad or mullet fished on simple Carolina rigs.
Habitat and access are varied. The Neches River above Beaumont is mostly freshwater with timbered banks, logjams, and outside bends—ideal for bass, crappie, and catfish. Below town, the river becomes increasingly brackish, with industrial structure, barge tie‑ups, and riprap that hold drum, reds, and seasonal trout. Sabine Lake and its marshes are shallow and wind‑sensitive, so plan around wind direction: a light southeast wind is generally manageable, while strong north winds post‑front can muddy exposed shorelines but often fire up the bite along protected leeward banks.
Techniques and tactical tips for Beaumont waters include:
- Bass and crappie: Flip Texas‑rigged plastics to laydowns and stumps, slow-roll spinnerbaits along current breaks, and work small jigs or minnows vertically around bridge pilings and submerged brush.
- Catfish: Anchor upriver of deep bends or outside turns, casting multiple baits at different distances. Give each spot 20–30 minutes before moving.
- Redfish: In off‑color river and marsh water, favor gold spoons, black/chartreuse soft plastics, and noisy popping cork rigs to help fish locate your bait.
- Trout: Fish low‑light windows with topwaters on shallow flats, then slide out to nearby 4–8 ft contours with soft plastics and suspending plugs as the sun rises.
- Flounder: Keep your presentation slow and close to bottom; after the initial thump, pause a moment before setting the hook to allow the fish to fully take the bait.
Because Beaumont sits at the freshwater–saltwater transition, success often comes from reading salinity, tide, and river flow. When river levels are high and fresh, push farther toward Sabine Lake; when flows are low and clear, excellent mixed‑bag fishing can happen right in the river outside town.
