Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 13:48 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Brownsville

Brownsville, Texas gives anglers a strategic launch point into some of the most productive waters on the Gulf Coast. You’re within striking distance of the Lower Laguna Madre, Boca Chica Beach, South Bay, and the nearshore Gulf, which means varied options in almost any weather and season.

In spring, water warms and bait pours into the bays. Speckled trout and redfish concentrate on shallow grass flats, shorelines, and potholes. Wade fishing with soft plastics on 1/16–1/8 oz jigheads, or suspending twitchbaits worked over grass, is a consistent pattern. Look for active mullet schools and slicks; make long, quiet wades, and fan-cast edges where sand meets grass. Black drum roam deeper potholes and channels, responding well to peeled shrimp or small crabs on light Carolina rigs.

Summer brings stable conditions and early/late bite windows. At first light, target trout and redfish along windward shorelines, spoil banks, and drains where tidal movement funnels bait. Topwaters shine at dawn; once the sun is up, switch to plastics or live shrimp under popping corks. Snook and the occasional tarpon show in South Bay and along the jetties; focus on structure, current seams, and shadow lines with swimbaits or live bait. Surf anglers working Boca Chica can find whiting, croaker, and slot reds in the first and second guts using shrimp, cut mullet, or fishbites on double-drop surf rigs.

Fall is arguably Brownsville’s prime season. As temperatures drop slightly, trout, redfish, and flounder feed aggressively ahead of winter. Work draining marshes, back-lakes, and channel mouths on moving tides. Redfish often school on shallow flats; sight-casting with weedless soft plastics or gold spoons can be deadly. Flounder lie along sandy edges and around any structure or drop-off; hop a soft plastic or use mud minnows and finger mullet tight to the bottom with minimal weight.

Winter concentrates fish in deeper water. On cold, calm days, trophy trout slide onto sun-warmed shallow flats, especially with dark mud or scattered shell; slow, methodical presentations with soft plastics or suspending baits pay off. Otherwise, fish channels, deeper holes, and ICW drops for trout, drum, and sheepshead with shrimp or small crabs fished slowly on the bottom.

For nearshore and offshore access, many Brownsville anglers trailer to nearby ports to run into the Gulf. Within reasonable range, you can target red snapper, lane snapper, king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, and cobia over wrecks, rigs, and natural structure. Vertical jigging, live bait on knocker rigs, and free-lined baits around surface activity are highly effective. Pay close attention to water color changes, bait schools, and bird activity to quickly locate fish.

Across Brownsville-area waters, success hinges on reading wind and tides, matching lure size to local bait, and staying mobile. Use high-quality polarized glasses to spot potholes, grass lines, and cruising fish, and keep a mix of topwaters, soft plastics, and natural baits rigged so you can adapt quickly as conditions change.

The Best Fishing Spots around Brownsville

Isla Blanca Park

At the southern tip of South Padre Island, Isla Blanca Park puts you right on the jetties and the Brownsville Ship Channel, where strong currents concentrate bait and predators; expect redfish, speckled trout, snook, tarpon (summer), Spanish mackerel, kingfish, and flounder, with peak action around tide changes and in the fall migration.

Laguna Madre

This famed hyper-saline lagoon between South Padre Island and the mainland features expansive grass flats and sand potholes ideal for sight-casting speckled trout, redfish, and flounder; spring through fall sees consistent topwater bites, with winter trout concentrating along deeper channels and drop-offs.

Brazos Santiago Pass

The shipping pass between South Padre Island and Boca Chica Beach funnels baitfish and creates rip lines that attract tarpon (summer), kingfish, Spanish mackerel, jack crevalle, redfish, and snook; anglers fish from the jetties or drift and troll by boat along tide changes.

Boca Chica Beach

The undeveloped surf along the lower coast near Brownsville provides classic beach fishing for pompano, whiting, redfish, black drum, and seasonal Spanish mackerel and jack crevalle; best during clean water and moving tides, with bait-filled gutters and cuts within casting range.

Brownsville Ship Channel

Deep, current-swept water from Brazos Santiago Pass to the Port of Brownsville holds redfish, black drum, sheepshead, mangrove snapper, flounder, and occasional snook; anglers work edges, pilings, and drop-offs by boat or from accessible banks and jetties.

South Bay

A shallow back-bay at the southern end of the Laguna Madre, South Bay’s grassy flats and mangrove shorelines are a hotspot for sight-fishing redfish, speckled trout, and flounder; prime on higher tides and sunny days when fish push onto the flats, accessible by kayak, wading, or shallow-draft boats.

Arroyo Colorado

Flowing to the Laguna Madre near Rio Hondo, this winding waterway mixes fresh and salt influences, producing speckled trout, redfish, snook, black drum, and catfish; anglers target lit docks at night, bends, and drop-offs, with strong bites in spring and fall.
