Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 13:56 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi fishing revolves around a diverse mix of shallow bays, grass flats, channels, and nearshore Gulf structure. The main playgrounds are Corpus Christi Bay, Nueces Bay, Oso Bay, and the upper Laguna Madre, plus the Packery Channel jetties and beachfront. Wind, tide, and water clarity dictate your moves, so plan around early-morning or late-afternoon windows when the summer sea breeze is lighter and the water cleans up.

Seasonally, spring brings trout and redfish shallow over warming flats and along spoil banks. Look for bait slicks and nervous mullet in waist-deep water from Shamrock Cove down into the Laguna Madre. Soft plastic paddletails on 1/8–1/4 oz jigheads, weightless jerkbaits, and topwaters work well when trout are scattered. Summer heat pushes fish into deeper guts, channels, and ICW edges; fish early and late with topwaters over potholes, then switch to soft plastics or live croaker dragged slowly along drops once the sun gets high.

In fall, north fronts trigger some of the best action of the year. Redfish school along the Corpus Christi Bay shoreline, jetties, and surf, often visible β€œbacking” or pushing wakes on calm mornings. Work gold spoons, weedless paddletails, or live shrimp under popping corks over sand/grass mix. Trout stack up along drop-offs, especially in the upper Laguna Madre and ICW; a slow sink-rate plastic in natural colors often outperforms flashier options in the ultra-clear water. Winter concentrates fish in deeper channels, holes, and warm mud bottoms. Wade or drift near drop-offs on sunny afternoons and throw suspending twitchbaits with long pauses for bigger trout; reds tend to graze on shallow mud flats adjacent to deeper water.

Knowing the habitat types is critical. The Laguna Madre is shallow and clear with extensive seagrass beds and potholes. This is prime territory for sight-casting reds and trout; polarized sunglasses and a quiet approach are more important than heavy tackle. Corpus Christi and Nueces bays have more stained water, oyster reefs, and deeper structure; focus on shell edges, channel turns, and spoil islands. The Packery Channel jetties and nearby surf hold Spanish mackerel, kingfish, sharks, and the occasional tarpon in warmer monthsβ€”freelined live bait, silver spoons, and diving plugs are standard here.

Common techniques include wade fishing, drift fishing, kayak fishing, and jetty casting. Waders often run 10–15 lb braid with 15–20 lb fluorocarbon leaders to handle shell and clear water. For artificial-only days, carry topwaters, soft plastics in natural and darker patterns, and a suspending jerkbait. When bait is preferred, live shrimp under a popping cork is the most versatile setup in the bays; pop just enough to click and then let it sit. For the surf and jetties, step up to 20–30 lb main line and longer rods to manage current and larger fish.

Tactical details matter in Corpus Christi. Use the wind to drift across flats at a 45-degree angle to pothole lines instead of straight downwind. Target current seams and eddies around jetty rocks, letting lures swing naturally rather than retrieving directly against the flow. In the clear Laguna Madre, downsize your leader and make longer casts; in wind-stained bay water, switch to louder corks and brighter colors to help fish locate your offering. Matching depth, water clarity, and bait presence to your presentation is the key to consistent fishing success around Corpus Christi.

The Best Fishing Spots around Corpus Christi

Bob Hall Pier

Arguably Corpus Christi’s signature surf pier on the Gulf, Bob Hall Pier draws heavy crowds for redfish, speckled trout, Spanish mackerel, and summertime kingfish runs, with spring and fall being prime for trout and bull reds; when water clarity is good, the end of the pier shines, and it’s a strong alternative to Horace Caldwell Pier or the Port Aransas South Jetty.

Packery Channel

This tidal channel and its granite jetties are famed for consistent speckled trout, redfish, and seasonal flounder, with bait pushed through on moving tides; clear-green water often brings in Spanish mackerel and occasional tarpon, making it a go-to when surf is rough and an easy hop from Bob Hall Pier.

Corpus Christi Bay

A vast, productive bay system offering wade, kayak, and boat access to reefs and shorelines for speckled trout, redfish, and black drum; calm summer mornings favor topwater trout, while colder months see drum and sheepshead along structure, with plenty of ramps and piers compared to the neighboring Nueces Bay.

Horace Caldwell Pier

Stretching into the Gulf at Port Aransas, this pier is renowned for trout, reds, pompano, and summertime kingfish and cobia near the tee; night lighting draws bait and predators, and it’s an excellent complement to the nearby Port Aransas South Jetty and Aransas Pass.

Laguna Madre

The hyper-saline Laguna Madre’s grass flats and spoil banks are legendary for sight-fishing redfish, speckled trout, and black drum, with summer topwater trout and winter big trout along deeper edges; it’s a premier kayak and skiff venue south of Corpus Christi Bay and west of Mustang Island.

Oso Bay

A shallow estuary off Corpus Christi Bay where tidal movement around the bridges and flats concentrates redfish, schoolie trout, and seasonal flounder; cooler months see drum along channel edges, and it offers convenient shore and kayak access compared to broader waters like the Laguna Madre.

Nueces Bay

Fed by the Nueces River, this bay features reefs and marsh edges that hold redfish, trout, and reliable black drum, with shells producing on moving tides; it’s a favorite when winds make Corpus Christi Bay tough, and it offers varied access points near the causeway and shoreline parks.

Lake Corpus Christi

A major freshwater reservoir northwest of Corpus Christi known for largemouth bass, blue and channel catfish, and white bass runs in tributaries; spring bass action around flooded brush and summer night catfishing are staples, making it a top inland option alongside coastal venues like Oso Bay.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 6 beaches and bays in this area.
