Fishing in Alexandria, VA revolves around the tidal Potomac River, with productive water right off the Old Town waterfront, Daingerfield Island, and nearby Belle Haven Marina. This stretch mixes river and estuary characteristics, so anglers see strong current, grass beds, deep channels, and hard structure that hold fish all year. Understanding tides and seasonal movements is the key to consistent success.

Spring is prime time for Alexandria fishing. As water temps climb into the 50s, largemouth bass slide shallow into marinas, creek mouths, and emerging grass beds. Target docks, riprap, and laydowns with compact jigs, Texas‑rigged creature baits, and shallow crankbaits. The shad run (American and hickory) peaks in April–May, drawing anglers to the main river channel edges. Light spinning tackle with shad darts, small spoons, and 1/8 oz jigheads in chartreuse, pink, or white is the standard approach. Winter fishing in Alexandria focuses on slower presentations and deeper structure. Bass and crappie stack on channel edges, barge walls, and pilings where the current is softer. The developed waterfront at National Harbor provides piers, bulkheads, and lighted structure that draw largemouth bass, striped bass, white perch, and urban-trophy blue catfish; shad pass through in spring and schoolies blitz bait under birds in cool months. Shore anglers fan-cast swimbaits and cut bait, while boats work harbor drop-offs, bridge pilings, and nearby main-river grass lines near Alexandria.

Jones Point Park

Under the Woodrow Wilson Bridge at the southern edge of Alexandria, Jones Point Park’s piers, eddies, and piling shadows hold spring shad, roaming striped bass, plentiful catfish, and summer white perch; fall brings bass ambushing along the riprap. Daingerfield Island

Just north of Old Town along the GW Parkway, Daingerfield Island and the Washington Sailing Marina offer riprap, docks, and channel edges that attract largemouth bass, prowling striped bass, white perch, and hefty blue catfish; summer brings snakehead to nearby grass. Shore anglers work the island perimeter while boats and kayaks slide into current breaks toward Gravelly Point.

Gravelly Point

Opposite Alexandria near the end of Reagan National Airport’s runway, Gravelly Point’s open point and riprap sit in strong tide where bait congregates; expect spring shad, roaming striped bass, and steady blue catfish and white perch, with summer shots at snakehead in nearby grass beds. It’s a classic shore-casting venue with sweeping current and bird activity.

Theodore Roosevelt Island

This wooded island in the Potomac offers quieter banks, eddies, and laydowns that produce smallmouth and largemouth bass, spring shad, occasional striped bass, plus reliable catfish and sunfish. Walk-in access and natural structure make it a favorite for light tackle and fly anglers within a short drive of Alexandria.

Fort Washington Park

Across the river from Alexandria, Fort Washington Park fronts deep tidal water and current lines ideal for blue catfish (including trophies), striped bass in shoulder seasons, spring shad, and shoreline white perch and largemouth bass. Shore access abounds, while nearby marinas enable boats to work ledges and river bends just off the fort.

Washington Channel

Running along the Southwest Waterfront toward Hains Point, the Washington Channel’s seawalls, docks, and lights hold urban concentrations of striped bass, abundant white perch, and heavyweight blue catfish; spring sees pulses of shad. Shore anglers ply the wall and piers, while boats jig structure and troll edges where the channel meets the Potomac.
